The S-400 is more capable than the Patriot, and they may view Russia as a more reliable vendor.

This site has been quirky today so I apologize for the separate thread.

Your quote above from another thread: I believe you are 100% correct. The S400 is scary good. The Patriot is still highly capable but honestly it came out in the very late ‘70’s or early ‘80’s if I remember correctly, and of course has had generations of software improvements, etc....

BUT: Historically, the U.S. has not put a huge amount of weight into Air Defense Artillery for the past 50 years. Why? (That’s my big question to you).

Remember we had the Hawk (then the I-Hawk) missile (old stuff).

Why do we not invest more into ADA? Is it because we are geared more towards defeating ADA systems that try to shoot our planes down? Is it because we don’t have a huge necessity to have it since we mostly project power instead of having to defend?

Interested in your opinion, because you seem well read and educated on such matters.

We have the most sophisticated radars and intercept fighters on earth - we completely own air superiority and therefore don't focus much of defensive ADA. My 2 cents...

Agree with that and OP, but maybe not a bad idea to invest in the tech or upgrading the Patriot tech to export to keep folks in our sphere of influence as it seems the Russians are using the S400 to bring folks into their sphere.

I have to believe there’s some serious work going on related to missile defense using lasers or high level energy beams, probably the only way to deal with hypersonic missiles.

Bass, what you said is cool, and sorry for the confusion, but I was talking about theater level and below air defense missiles that attempt to shoot down fighter jets or bombers. Is that the same thing you are talking about or were you thinking I meant long range intercontinental ballistic missiles shot over thousands of miles?

I’m in no way an expert but currently I believe laser/high level energy beam missile defense would probably apply to ICBM, long range and intermediate range missiles, but you have to think the US is working with that same technology to intercept any type of threat, whether it’s a cruise missile, aircraft, drones, etc.

I do know this type of weapon takes a shite load of power and it’s much easier to deploy ground based batteries but there are some that have been successfully tested in aircraft based systems. Who knows what systems exists in low earth orbit, we’re talking SDI stuff.

Absolutely correct , and a lot of the boogeyman bs about the 400 is Russian disinformation and social media propaganda .
