The advertisement was a promotion to the South and specifically Louisiana which has the highest rate of new HIV and existing HIV rates in the country. So yes, the media is trying to prove a point

Look, I am not going to call them degenerates but 98% of our population is not gay. Therefore, I don’t want to see two men or two women kissing on TV. I just find it weird.

Because it's important to them that we all understand that THIS IS the United States of America, and, if we do not embrace this stuff, then WE are Un-American.
It's to send a clear message that the USA has been fundamentally transformed, in Obama's image, and that those who are not on board with this are Un-American, Un-Patriotic and Bigoted.
