OH Candidate Wants Reparations for Civil War Soldiers: ‘White People Died To Free Blacks"

Ohio Senate Republican candidate Bernie Moreno (R-OH) proposed reparations for White people who fought in the Union army during Civil War in announcing his run for the Congressional seat on Tuesday.
Moreno said that since White Union soldiers died during the war, reparations should be enacted on their behalf.
“We stand at the shoulders of giants, don’t we?” Moreno said. “We stand on shoulders of people like John Adams, James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, George Washington. That this group of people took on the largest empire in history. They said no, we will not stand for this. That same group of people later, White people, died to free Black people. It’s never happened in human history before, but it happened here in America.”
Moreno claimed, “that’s not talked about in schools very much, is it? They make it sound like America is a racist, broken country.”
“Name another country that did that, freed slaves, that died to do that. You know, when they talk about reparations, where are the reparations for the people in the North who died to save the lives of Black people?” he said. “I know it’s not politically correct to say that, but we gotta stop being politically correct. We gotta call it how it is.”

As to the Civil War, I would say that “there were fine people on both sides”.

The civil war was about states' rights. And I still don't understand the controversy behind the confederate flag. It's a fricking flag, if people are stupid enough to get offended by a flag then they should have their voting rights revoked. Any picture or flag is guarenteed freedom of speech. if I chose to fly a Nazi flag at a college campus, there would be consequences. But as long as I'm not hurting anyone it's my constitutional right to do so. It's just a piece of cloth for fricks sake.

I want reparations for my brothers that were murdered by a tyrannical government.

This and the south was about ten years from completely ending slavery anyway due to modernization of the time. Civil War was a war of economics like most wars.

Not entirely. It's a mixture. To not include the fact that several states had slavery and their want to keep it as part of their charter as to why they were joining/declaring with the secession movement.
It can be both. They both played roles in the war.
To leave one of them out would be disingenuous.

I thought the Union soldiers fought to save the union and not free any slaves?

I could be wrong but Lincoln wasn't on the ballot in the South.
