Obviously he should have dropped the bat. The dude was high on something. Sad case. But was a death sentence the necessary outcome when he refused to cooperate?

As with questionable use of middle-of-night no-knock raids, this is another example of an area where police training reform is necessary. It is an example of standard practice stupidity.

Standard police firearm practice is to shoot "center of mass". Period. That is how these guys are trained. Breaking training protocol can get cops in deep trouble. So, as they are trained, so they operate.

We are going to find the same issue in the Chauvin-Floyd case as well. Chauvin was likely doing exactly as his office and training had directed. By the book. No variance. Protocol dictates in "X" circumstance the officer do A, B, C. That's what is done.

So cops are trained to shoot "center of mass". In scenarios where the perp has a firearm, or is charging at the cop, shooting "center of mass" is absolutely appropriate.

However, in situations where the guy has a baseball bat and is 6ft away, or he's drunk and running away in a Wendy's parking lot, these cops should be trained to disable, not to kill. In this case, I'd bet planting a slug or two into BabeRuth's femur would have gotten him to drop the bat.

Sucks being a cop right now. You're damned if you do. Damned if you don't. I'd guess had the officer actually shot the leg, he'd have been reprimanded and disciplined for ignoring his firearms training.

So BabeRuth goes down for the count . . .

America doesn't really have a racist police force problem.

Easier said than done. When the bullet knicks an artery, he will still be charged with homicide.

So we just need to only have officers that can hit a 3 inch square at several feet under adrenaline and pressure. No problem at all.

How about we give cops tranq guns with powerful paralytics?

Or maybe idiots can just learn to not commit crimes and fight the cops, and normal people can stop caring when they suffer for it. I think this is the best method, personally.

How fast do you think someone can close a 17 foot gap and swing a bat? How many shots can the cop get off in that timeframe? What if he misses or doesn't seriously hurt the suspect?

It takes ONE swing of a bat to kill, seriously hurt, or at least disable someone... if I had a confrontation with someone holding a bat in a threatening manner within 15-20 feet of me, I would absolutely consider it a deadly threat.

The solution is obvious and simple… The police officer should pick up another thug from the hood in route to the crime scene. If the suspect at the crime scene gets out of hand the thug who came along for the ride can shoot him dead and no one will say a word, certainly not the media or the AA community. Suspect is neutralized. Police officer is not implicated. Nothing in the news. No one cares.

Thanks LBJ. The newer(ish) component is social media and cell phones and near absolute condemnation of the police for doing their jobs. Now, not only do these black men have zero experience with authority in the home, they also have the idea that they don't have to listen to police because they will be martyred. It is a societal sickness.
