Democratic socialist congressional candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is pushing for the Electoral College to be abolished.

Ocasio-Cortez -- who surprisingly won the Democratic primary in New York's 14th congressional district earlier this year -- responded over the weekend to a Twitter user who pointed out that two presidents who both lost the popular vote -- George W. Bush and Donald Trump -- have now placed four justices on the Supreme Court.

"It is well past time we eliminate the Electoral College, a shadow of slavery’s power on America today that undermines our nation as a democratic republic," Ocasio-Cortez wrote.

More idiocy in the article. We need to prop this moron up as the face of Democrats. This one is a real head scratcher.

She should probably take a basic economics course before she worries about designing election platforms.

The "legacy of slavery" will be their excuse for shredding the entire Constitution and implementing Communism. If we let them

She is correct you know in that electoral votes in the electoral college was based on counting slaves as 3/5 a person in apportioning seats in the House of Representatives.

That is in the past now, but there is an undeniable link between the electoral college and slavery.

She’s got a bachelors degree in economics from Boston University. Their accreditation should be stripped after the interviews I’ve seen of her.

Sounds like we need to get rid of the House of Representatives then and only keep the Senate.

You are more than welcome to lead a movement to amend the constitution. No one is stopping you.

your post is very misleading and prob based on ignorance. The link is in no way related to the implication. Let's just get rid of the HOR while we're at it.

I say again.

When the EC was established, 5 of the 7 smallest states in the union were non-slave states. 2 of the top 5 were slave states. Connecticut is going to be surprised it's wishes were the result of slave preferences.

Oh, and Abe Lincoln probably isn't President without the EC.

The Electoral College itself had nothing to do with slavery... the Three-Fifths Compromise ot 1787 resolved a conflict between slave-holding and non-slaveholding States on how to apportion the electors.... saying the Electoral College was somehow rooted in slavery is a straw man argument based on a false premise.... but you already knew that

Dana Perino, no pic, stated that Lincoln only got 36% of the vote but won the electoral. Didn't he help abolish slavery? I can't recall.

Just because slavery was accounted for (3/5ths compromise) in the electoral college doesn't mean that they're connected.

If that's the case slavery and the system of law here in America and in virtually every country has a connection with slavery because at some point virtually every country on the planet had laws that gave the limitations of slavery (who could own who, for how long, what rights did slaves have, etc.).

So the legal system in its most general sense is a shadow of slavery by that metric.

Honestly, what isn't (by that standard)? Slaves built buildings, farmed farm land, ate food, etc.

Yup.

Dumb arse is trying to put the effect before the cause.

The EC was going to happen and already decided upon. Slave states were pissed at first because slaves weren't going to be counted at all. They wanted to count all of them.

The 3/5 compromise came out of that battle. It was an EFFECT.

no there isn’t.

the electoral college has nothing to do with salver or racism.

it’s a way to balance large populations vs small populations.

who made up those populations and how they were counted was never the basis of electoral college.
