Is that what they are marching for? Much of the reporting seems to be quite short on who these people are and why they are demonstrating except for the gas tax.

Gee, I wonder why.
They are not protesting because of a gas tax. That is just what the MSM wants people to think, that they are protesting global warming/climate change.
The reality is they are protesting a government that does not represent the people and a long history of ever increasing government overreach and taxation.
The "gas tax" was just the final straw/tipping point

I don't see how you can say a massive tax meant to fight GW/CC is about the GW/CC and not the tax, or both.
