Northwestern Apologizes to Students for Reporting News That Triggered Them
quote:

A newspaper staffed by the country's most famous journalism school says it shouldn't have covered a Jeff Sessions event.

The Daily Northwestern is the student newspaper of Northwestern University, which is home to the Medill School of Journalism—one of the best regarded journalism schools in the country. Many Medill students work at the paper, reporting on the news.

quote:

One area of our reporting that harmed many students was our photo coverage of the event. Some protesters found photos posted to reporters' Twitter accounts retraumatizing and invasive. Those photos have since been taken down. On one hand, as the paper of record for Northwestern, we want to ensure students, administrators and alumni understand the gravity of the events that took place Tuesday night. However, we decided to prioritize the trust and safety of students who were photographed. We feel that covering traumatic events requires a different response than many other stories. While our goal is to document history and spread information, nothing is more important than ensuring that our fellow students feel safe

re: Northwestern Apologizes to Students for Reporting News That Triggered Them
It seems more to do with exposing students to retaliation due to their protests. Putting names and faces together making it easy for other students to get their information.

Which yeah, you shouldn't fear retaliation due to a protest, but the same time if you are doing shite in public you have to expect it could get out who you are.

For those who don't know, the protest went beyond peaceful and students tried to storm the hall where Sessions was talking. The campus police stopped with some minor force.

The President didn't really like Sessions being there, but spoke up for the right of him to be invited and kind of told the protesters to get bent. They will be punished for their actions.

Your link conveniently omits the reason student protesters were upset and purposely misrepresents the facts. It insinuates that students were upset by any coverage of Jeff Sessions. But students were not upset about the paper covering the Jeff Sessions appearance, it was about the paper "outting" protesters by name at a school that has zero tolerance for protesting. Now I understand you can argue if the students were protesting they open themselves up to the consequences. But your link is garbage journalism and written purely to appeal to people like you.

There is no place just to get the news.

Yet it took me 30 seconds to find the facts on this. When you see a headline full of "buzz" words from the left or right, be skeptical.

What a bunxh of BS. People out in public have absolutely no expectation of privacy.

That journalism school should close its doors.

They weren't exactly apologizing for the pictures, but for providing the names to go with them.

Apparantly they also used the university directory to cold call people in the protests to get quotes.

But that is not what the OPs link was about. The linked article tried to make it out as if students were triggered by the paper even covering the Sessions appearance and the paper was apologizing for doing so. It was Rightwing clickbait.

I read it as they were upset they were outed, which is retarded.

Wrong. Zero tolerance doesn’t encompass any and all protesting such as simply attending.

quote:

Schapiro emphasized that Northwestern has no such policy. He said NU makes “the rules of engagement” very clear: “You can protest, you can’t hurt anybody and you can’t shut down speech. And if you do, you’re going to face the consequences.”

Students were rushing the doors of the building where Sessions was speaking and had to be physically removed by campus police.

How do you feel about journalists who pass on “outing” students by removing anything they documented while covering people who did this publicly and in some instances, gave their name in an interview?

Some that were outed did not give their names.

I can't understand why many college students today are terrified of other ideas, ideologies, etc

They claim to love diversity but we know that's not true.

I'm not sure it is all that different than in the past. The stories of David Duke at LSU are legendary.

Maybe more venom is spewed since as a society we just accept more of it into our daily life. Lack of general respect because respect not an action admired by society.

Rise of identity politics probably also explains it some of it. Also those who view a position against your political ideas is an attack against you personally now.
