Washington more or less declining a crown to go home and be a farmer was a turning point in human history.

But the greatness of a lot of presidential actions depends on external factors that are beyond the control of the particular POTUS - it is how he reacts to them that matter. If nothing of great import happens, then it is difficult to place them in the same group of those who DID meet those unanticipated challenges and kept our national honor prideful.

Absolutely true. Many of our lesser known Presidents are that simply because nothing of great importance happened during their term. They basically just held the course.

most of his accomplishments were also prior to his presidency.

tru dat - he ranks among the very highest in my order of founding fathers, but his actual presidency was devoid of any actions that promote his position in that area.

I think it was Washington who set the standard for limiting service to two terms. Adams only served one term.

Mate we used to argue over DJT in 2015

Were you one of those who I 'had problems with' in that 2015 primary??

I was way out in the woods during that time. = knew nothing of DJT other than his playboy image and his narcissism. Had never even watched a single episode of "you're FIRED" series. I had my favorite in that primary - Cruz - and I detested what Trump did against him, as well as others.

It wasn't until he became POTUS and started doing all the things I've always wanted done that I changed my mind about him - and then I began finding out that he had always been on the conservative side of politics - I had judged him only by his donations to DEMs while he was in NYC.

Anyway, I change wholly - and there is no greater admired of him around - I sincerely believe now that he is the ONLY one who could have averted the disaster of having Hillary follow Obama in office - we would be unsalvageable by the time that regime played itself out.

If nothing else - just keeping Hillary out of office warrants a place on Rushmore.

It was that important.

If you ever have the chance to go to Yorktown you should. It’s great to get to walk the battlements and see the guns in their position and imagine war 250 years ago. Very wild.

The best part are the actual British cannons lined up at the surrender field and how beautiful they are. True elite examples of metal smithing decoratively and as effective weapons. They’re also copper I believe so they have a beautiful green patina as they’ve oxidized. Great etchings and royal symbols and what not. Gives you a real good idea how they were the elite power at the time that they were fighting wars with things that were that delicately crafted for looks as much as effectiveness.

And then the American cannons are some rough brass or iron or whatever that barely works that some farmer made in his barn and we whipped that arse

am not willing to forgive him of his actions on trying to stuff the SCOTUS and setting in motion the welfare state.

It sucked, but I'm not sure if he was villain or savior.

Washington is easily one of the most legendary figures in all of history. No President is likely to ever be better than him

Am I remembering my history wrong? - I thought Cornwallis sent out a representative to surrender and Washington had one of his lieutenants accept the surrender sword. but God Bless George Washington and God Bless America and God Bless Donald Trump!!!!

Nope, you got it right. Cornwallis said he wasn't feeling well, so he sent his second in command, who offered his sword to French general Rochambeau. The Rochambeau refused to accept it and gestured toward Washington, who pointed him to his second in command, Benjamin Lincoln. Lincoln accepted Cornwallis' sword.

They have Cornwallis' desk, where he signed the surrender, at Yorktown, along with Washington's command tent.

As I wrote, I’m unsure about him. But here is the argument for him.

FDR took over during the worst economic downturn in US history. It was also about 15 years after Communist took over in Russia. Most of the West’s intellectuals believed Marxism was the future, and this economic downturn was the opening the Marxists needed to gain power in America.

FDR realized that to beat them he had to co-opt them to some extent. By building a social safety net he could pull the teeth from the Marxists and prevent full socialism. The reactionary right opposed this and he used every weapon at his disposal to bludgeon them into accepting Social Security, WPA, and Unemployment insurance. This had the effect he wanted, and Marxism was forced back into the American shadows.

O’Hara was the British general who handed his sword to Benjamin Lincoln.

Lincoln had surrendered at Charleston so it was great for him. O’Hara was Irish. Sucked for him that Cornwallis bailed.

Cornwallis was ill with chickenshit syndrome.

The French and Americans hosted a banquet for the British officers but told them Bloody Ban Tarleton was not invited.

Reagan and Trump had the luxury of succeeding train wrecks BUT for all the positives from looking great due to previous Presidential ineptitude, don't forget before Trump, the MSM hated Reagan first...so both had mountains to climb...Reagan had it easier.

The Mulford Act was a 1967 California bill that prohibited public carrying of loaded firearms without a permit.[2] Named after Republican assemblyman Don Mulford and signed into law by governor of California Ronald Reagan, the bill was crafted with the goal of disarming members of the Black Panther Party, which was conducting armed patrols of Oakland neighborhoods in what would later be termed copwatching.[3][4] They garnered national attention after Black Panthers members, bearing arms, marched upon the California State Capitol to protest the bill.[5][6]
...
Both Republicans and Democrats in California supported increased gun control, as did the National Rifle Association of America.[12][13] Governor Ronald Reagan, who was coincidentally present on the Capitol lawn when the protesters arrived, later commented that he saw "no reason why on the street today a citizen should be carrying loaded weapons" and that guns were a "ridiculous way to solve problems that have to be solved among people of good will." In a later press conference, Reagan added that the Mulford Act "would work no hardship on the honest citizen."[3]

Reagan was great because Ford and Carter were so bad.

Oddly Nixon would have gone down as a Reaganesque President if the CIA hadn’t orchestrated Watergate.
