Police say 49 people have been killed. More than 20 have been seriously wounded after two mosque shootings in Christchurch, New Zealand

NZ PM Jacinda Ardern described the shootings as a "terrorist attack" and one of the country's "darkest hours"

A man in his late 20s has been charged with murder. Three more people are in custody.

Australian PM Scott Morrison confirmed an Australian-born citizen had been arrested and called him an "extremist rightwing violent terrorist"

Authorities have told all mosques to shut their doors until further notice

BBC

Shooter live streamed the murder on Facebook.

I've seen some reports that someone fired back at the second mosque which repelled the shooter, but no major outlets are reporting on it yet.

6:00 AM — CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand (AP) — National carrier Air New Zealand has canceled at least 17 flights in and out of Christchurch, saying it couldn’t screen customers and their baggage following deadly shootings at two mosques. The airline said some smaller planes traveling on regional routes were canceled while larger jet planes would continue landing and taking off due to security screening processes already in place.

Purchase or import of military style semi-automatics and all handguns must be individually approved by, and registered with, the New Zealand police. Without a valid and current firearms license, you cannot legally purchase any firearm other than a pellet gun anywhere in New Zealand. There is probably a black market or some other means of acquiring a firearm illegally, but firearms recovered from drug busts or other organised criminal activities typically amount to hunting rifles or pump action shot guns. Handguns and military style semi-automatics are rare, difficult to obtain, and very expensive. So how do Kiwis go about getting their hands on guns? The process for obtaining a basic firearms license is long, complicated and expensive. In other words, designed to weed out a broad portion of the population that the law deems unsuitable to possess a firearm.

Am I missing the info that required a separate thread?

The other op is full of incorrect facts and outright disinformation.

Because it was posted when the story broke. The thread evolved as new info became available. Fair point though.

How was he able to obtain firearms?

I'm guessing he was under the radar before this.

"extremist rightwing violent terrorist"

They have a left and right in Australia? Or is that opposite like everything else from down under?

violent terrorist is not enough.

We shall see how much the right wing stands out in the reporting for this.

Prayers for all those in New Zealand affected by this and those not.

He called himself an "ethno nationalist eco fascist" or some shite. If people want to play the blame game then there's a bite in that shite sandwich for almost everyone.

This was my point. Instead using his title they use what would hit home as a right wing terrorist in America. Thanks for the info.

Australians now own more guns in total than they did before the 1996 crackdown, according to figures from 2016 - the last time they were comprehensively studied.

Them gun free zones sure seem safe. Good thing someone broke the rules at the 2nd place and was able to repel them.

I'll update the OP, but if you read this guy's manifesto, it is clear that he is trying to cause dissent, especially in the USA.

He is specifically trying to ignite another civil war. That's why he has aligned himself with both extreme left and right causes. He knows that each side will only latch onto one part of the story in order to excite their base.

Boy, there sure make it a point to say where the attacker came from, their political leanings, and are quick to label it “terrorism” in this particular case. If someone had rammed through a Christmas market it would have been called an isolated incident from an Asian native.
