New York Times Tech Columnist: Twitter Too Powerful
Posted by JudgeHolden on 1/9/21 at 10:56 pm481
In Pulling Trump’s Megaphone, Twitter Shows Where Power Now Lies
quote:
The ability of a handful of people to control our public discourse has never been more obvious.
quote:
In the end, two billionaires from California did what legions of politicians, prosecutors and power brokers had tried and failed to do for years: They pulled the plug on President Trump.
quote:
Mr. Dorsey and Mr. Zuckerberg’s names have never appeared on a ballot. But they have a kind of authority that no elected official on earth can claim.
quote:
But there are legitimate questions about whether a small handful of unelected tech executives, accountable only to their boards and shareholders (and, in Mr. Zuckerberg’s case, to neither) should wield such enormous power. These actions also raise longer-term questions, such as whether the business models of social media companies are fundamentally compatible with a healthy democracy, or whether a generation of Twitter-addicted politicians can ever be untaught the lesson that racking up retweets is a surer path to power than governing responsibly.
quote:
But that will be cold comfort to Mr. Trump, who now finds himself on the wrong side of the bright line these companies have drawn. The president railed against Twitter's ban on Friday night, releasing a fiery statement through the White House press office that claimed, “We will not be SILENCED!” But in the ways that matter most to him, he already had been.

Twitter is more influential than NYT.

Maybe so, but the media as a whole needs to take a good look at themselves.

I'm guessing they don't trust that the power social media giants currently hold will not somehow be used against them, for whatever reason. Although the financial aspect being most likely. This current power seems to give social media a leg up on the competition, which I assume they do see each other as the competition, in one way or another. Or in numerous ways.

I'll guarantee you that within a week, this author will either be fired, or make a groveling apology for "supporting fascism".

It's a column, not an editorial board opinion. It's just the tech columnist saying this.

Is Twitter’s ban of Trump a worrying Free Speech issue? On reflection I think not because
(a) Trump went far beyond expression of opinion (which should be protected) to outright lies, demonstrable falsehoods. Falsehoods, moreover which were calculated to
(b) incite violence.
