Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel released new details on the actions of the School Resource Officer assigned to Marjory Stoneman-Douglas High on the day of the mass shooting that claimed the lives of 17 students and faculty. At a Thursday press conference at BSO headquarters in Fort Lauderdale, Israel stated that sheriff’s deputy Scott Peterson, who was on duty at Stoneman-Douglas at the time of the incident, took cover instead of engaging Nikolas Cruz, the person suspected of carrying out the attack. “He was armed, he was in uniform,” Israel said, but citing witness statements and video footage, “what I saw was a deputy arrived at the west side if building 12, take up a position, and he never went in.” Israel suspended Peterson without pay pending an investigation however the deputy chose to “resign/retire” instead of being suspended. Israel says the investigation into Peterson’s actions will continue.

Sheriff Israel also revealed BSO deputies had responded to calls involving Cruz 23 times since 2008. The deputies involved in that incident are also under investigation by the department.

WTH???!

Yikes. This absolutely and completely validates the point that Dana Loesch made about the government completely failing to "protect" citizens. Failures from every conceivable angle here. How the hell does the Sheriff not resign? 23 responses and his agency does nothing, and then when the bullets fly his deputy hides while children are shot?

It's awful

Made more awful by the fact the Sheriff will continue to use this new revelation to further shield himself from criticism for dropping the ball like 15 times

Not something most people would be able to live with.
Won’t surprise me if the guy ultimately discovers he’s unable to do so.

So if an actual police officer was too afraid to make a move, we should obviously arm menopausal women to protect the children.

Do these guys have any protocol to explain it, like they have to wait for backup in an active shooter situation?

I'm guessing not since he was suspended without pay, then resigned. But I don't know jack about law enforcement protocol for these situations.

Inside vs outside matters

You think Israel doesn’t defend himself if he was in a room and Cruz is firing his way? He was just too big of a pussy to run inside and help when already safe outside

There's a difference in actively engaging a shooter and protecting your students once the shooter is trying or does enter a classroom.

Particularly when you are paid to go into the line of fire to protect the citizenry.

Wouldn't be surprised to see him off himself with guilt. I'd certainly consider it myself if I were in his shoes.

If this doesn’t convince people that they need to be armed to protect themselves, because the cops might cower in fear, I don’t know what would.

women

There are multiple recorded instances of women shielding their students with their own bodies (e.g., Sandy Hook).
You highly underestimate not only a woman’s natural instincts, but her bravery.
Your comment is unfair.

Football coach that gave his life seems he’d have been up to the task.

In 2014, the Broward County Crime Commission named Peterson the SRO of the year for the Parkland district of the Broward Sheriff’s Office.

“During this time, Deputy Peterson has proven to be reliable in handling issues with tact and judgment,” the award said. “Throughout 2014, Deputy Peterson conducted numerous investigations and follow-ups entailing property crimes, assaults and narcotics violations. Deputy Peterson is also active in mentoring and counseling students.”

This is why having armed guards is a bad idea. They constantly fail to do their job.

I don't believe the officer would balled up in a fetal position if he was cornered. Anyone cornered would have fired back including menopausal women.
