If you start viewing these folks as rearguard liberals, it makes a lot more sense. They aren't deranged or stupid; they're doing exactly what their roles call for.

I don’t get their approach.

They would be better off saying “look we were embarrassingly wrong about Trump in many regards. I’m thrilled that we were wrong in that he’s advanced conservatism beyond our wildest dreams. We needed this to toughen us up and understand your frustration that led to you supporting Trump. Sincere apologies that we were so wimpy for the last 25 years. But (with all that said) I feel that many of our initial points still stand.... we had a lot to learn from the unwashed masses... but you also have a lot you can learn from us.”

Shapiro at least has some inclination to the above approach. Erickson does as well lately. The others are unbearable.
