Stalin and Mao were rational though. How can you deter a nation who is willing (at least their leaders are) to be martyred?

They got a belly full of FO from Israel when some of their leadership got taken out due to info from within the Iranian hierarchy and then 3 of their nuclear research facilities got bombed gave them a taste of FO from the US.
The biggest issue with this story is logistics. Iran doesn't have the ability to fire off an ICBM from anywhere close enough to the US that it wouldn't be easily intercepted before making it even into our territorial waters. They would need to fire off TONS of them to keep us from bombing them further back to the Stone Age in retaliation.
They could target a US base (like in Saudi), but that would be a very small return for so much effort (and still invite strong retaliation).
So this all leaves Israel as their primary target of opportunity.
