Necessities that weren't necessary 40 years ago

I got to talking to my 20 year-old son, who, God willing, will be moving out of the house in a year or so. We discussed the expenses of living on your own, and I realized that kids to day spend money on things we didn't, back in the day.
When I was a kid, I didn't have to spend money on:
Cell phones
Cell phone plans
Internet
Laptop
TV in the bedroom
Health insurance that cost 20% of my monthly budget
Gaming systems
Streaming services
bottled water
Am I missing anything? I know some of these things aren't "necessary", but they seem to be for kids, today. This is $4-500 bucks a month before they even start making a car payment, utilities, rent, food, etc.
No wonder people feel poor and want the government to give them assistance...

Most of these are not necessities. Sounds like you need to teach your son more about need vs want.

He needs none of that stuff except insurance which was needed 40 years ago as well
A prepaid cell phone plan with cheap phone is like $30 a month

Precisely what our conversation was about. I told him to dial back his expectations on what he could afford. He is poor.
My son is a spontaneous buyer. Both of my daughters can stretch a dollar. My son struggles. They are triplets, and all got the same lessons, growing up...

40 years ago, most employers covered all or most of the cost of insurance. Today, it is a major expense for young people.

Tell him to get an efficiency apartment. Problem solved.

You're in Jax? Thankfully the cost of living isn't out of control there but, yes, he can live without some of those things. Living in Miami way back when I was a staff was a biiiiitch.

Everyone I know in their 20s pays Instacart to shop for and deliver their groceries.

Gonna need pics to confirm this, recent pics only of course. Boy optional.

Cell phones - Necessary, but can go cheap
Cell phone plans - See above
Internet - Need if in college but can go on campus and use computers/internet
Laptop - See above
TV in the bedroom - Not necessary
Health insurance that cost 20% of my monthly budget - Necessary
Gaming systems - LOL Not necessary
Streaming services - LOL not necessary
bottled water - drink tap water
I see 3 things that are necessary and 2 of them you can go cheap on. The other things are luxuries. Tough lesson to learn for the youth of today.

Of those, cell phone and internet are pretty much necessities. 20% of income towards health insurance is damn high - find a cheaper plan or figure something else out because he is getting screwed. Either your income is low enough to qualify for Medicaid or your employer needs to do better.
Laptop is a one-time cost wherein even an expense Apple laptop amortized over its useful life shouldn't be more than $30 - 50 per month.
The rest of it are very much need-to-haves, not must-haves.

Poor young people can get obamacare for like $40 a month

Given that we have folks on welfare with big screen HDTVs, the latest cell phones, and a minimum of $1k in video game systems & software, yeah...

Cell phone and internet access are the only two things on that list that are really "necessities"

I'm saying that these so-called "necessities" are why people think they are poor these days. Too many people think they have to have all this shite. Then they wake up one day and it's time to retire and they don't have any money.
This is why Socialism is attractive to people. They view it as a retirement plan.
