These are the new lib talking points. I'm seeing it all over DU Everytime NATO is mentioned. And a few of our libs are bringing it up here.

No the unprecedented peace we've had since WW2 is because of nukes.

Generally people will be hesitant to go to war if 30 minutes later all their major cities will be smoking heaps of rubble.

Big alliances do not stop wars. They actually cause them. Does anyone need a history lesson on the escalation of WW1?

Of course I'm referring to peace between actual great powers and super powers. Nukes (and alliances between powers) aren't going to prevent wars involving minor powers and bannana republic's.

Correct. Along with the United States Navy.

NATO=USA....the rest of the nations in the alliance are inconsequential.

One thing that is never mentioned is that when NATO was formed and growing, the USA had an affinity for the member nations. Today, the USA doesn't much like the member nations and they certainly don't like us. We are more like quarreling next door neighbors than staunch friends. Why are we obligated to stay?

Good thing NATO has had our backs huh? We might have lost some of those wars without them.

Not necessarily the alliance itself, but the signed treaties that require country A to go to war if country B is attacked by country C. That sort of thing escalates shite fast.

This is the idea being pushed by guys like McCain. If Russia attacks Montenegro, the entire world is supposed to go to war according to him.

Well sometimes they can if only for the extended power projection which can deter an enemy. The flip side is that they can lead to much more massive, devastating wars that states are dragged into that are completely outside of their rational national interests and would otherwise be avoided entirely. They can also enable smaller members of that alliance to act in a more belligerent fashion knowing that they have the power projection of the alliance behind them.

NATO was a sensible and valuable alliance system when the opponent was the Soviet Union and its vassals in the Eastern Bloc. It shouldn't have been expanded post-1991 and it's raison d'etre is totally outdated. Its existence is essentially like a bureaucracy. Once the purpose of its establishment has been achieved, it simply finds other reasons for continued existence and expansion. It's an international bureaucracy.

The Cold War was peace between superpowers? And the Cold War didn't help spawn Korea and Vietnam?

These are the same libs who published US military casualty lists and pictures every evening for the final 6yrs of W's Administration on the nightly news?

The families of roughly 100,000 dead US servicemen, casualties of US war missions since WWII, might take exception to the premise. How many EU troops were killed in that same timeframe?

This is poor thinking and lacks appreciation for what was happening on the ground in Europe. Please explain why Poland and other countries were so eager to join NATO.

FTR - I agree with trump member nations should step up. I want a strong NATO, led by the US.

Not sure why I'm getting downvoted, NATO has not instilled "peace" since the end of WW2.

I am a 35 year old combat veteran........OBVIOUSLY we have not had peace since WW2!

You are getting downvoted for using a black reaction meme, which the left has declared “digital blackface” and is therefore racist.

I wish I were kidding.

Sticky, you appear to be the one in need of a history lesson. Where did all of this anti- alliance, anti- foreign, hysteria come from? I’ve never seen that crap take hold like it has in the last few years. It was always the nutty relative at a holiday dinner who spouted off that crap that made us roll our eyes.
