NATO defense spending in dollar figures

Full disclosure, I'm trying to get some clarity on the gap in defense spending in nato. NATO defense spending is often reported in % of a country's GDP.
The USA spends roughly 3.57% of an $18.75 trillion GDP, whereas germany spends roughly 1.24% of a $3.75 trillion GDP.
Dumbing that down to dollar figures, the USA is spending roughly $700 billion on NATO defense while Germany pays roughly $50 billion.
Where am I going wrong? If my numbers are correct, Trump needs to keep going hard on these countries to pay their fair share.

Our contributions to Europe's defense are essentially welfare state subsidies. Of course the Europeans can afford cradle to grave welfare states so long as the saps in the United States continue to be the world's police.

We give the UN way too much as well. Time to drastically reduce those funds and kick those pricks out of the country too.

If the other countries would meet the 2% gdp target, allowing the USA to do the same, the usa dollar figure would reduce from roughly $700 billion to $375 billion.

And how many nations comprise NATO? That is ridiculous.

Pretty sure that is our total expenditure, not just what goes to NATO.

Absolutely THIS!!! Once Uncle Sam stops subsidizing Europe's defense they will no longer be able to afford their massive welfare states. THAT'S why the Euros are up in arms over this.

That chart is helpful. Didn't consider exchange rates. The premise is the same: USA is getting fricked.

If I’m not mistaken each member signed an agreement back in 2006 that they would each spend 2% of their GDP by 2024.
Each country still has time to hit that goal, however hardly any of have consistently hit it so far so you can draw a conclusion that most won’t hit that number by 2024. Trump is right to hit them right now with it versus waiting.
It’s definitely an issue a president can tackle at full length in 2020 and 2024 if most of the NATO members are below the 2% mark.

Pretty sure you are correct but the argument being put forward is "spending on military defense", which would mean TOTAL spending... NATO countries are supposed to be spending 2% of their GDP on defense...
Try to keep up...

Oh, I have no problem with complaining about their expenditures. I also have no problem with our guys being in safe places as deterrents (Europe, Japan, Korea, Singapore, etc.).
I do object to the fact that we become the de facto defense force for these places while they spend their money on other things.
Given that the Cold War is almost 30 years gone, and WWII much further back, I am a little surprised there has never been a movement by any of these countries to say we should leave altogether. I can't imagine having another country's forces inside our borders as an actual fighting force. De Gaulle was an unmitigated arse, but you do have to give him a little credit for saying France was not going to have foreign forces in his country.

There are 28 countries in NATO. As of 2017, Canada pays less than 1% GDP.

I think these numbers the spending on defense, not necessarily just on NATO.

All those countries afraid of Russia and not keeping up their end of the bargain.
We are fools.
We are fools.
