National dems warn CA dems: new labor law for gig workers will cost us house seats

Perhaps the main reason CA25 swung 19 points to the gop from 2018 to 2020 is because of a state law: AB5.
It forces independent contractors to be classified as employees. It has hit musicians, therapists, etc hard, and has cost many jobs and flexibility.
It's extremely unpopular in southern california, and national dems are privately worried that it will cost them 6 or so seats they won in 2018.
Truckers and sign-language teachers say it robs them of freedom.

It's the worst law passed in ca in my time living here.
It has cost so many people jobs.
Classic example of unintended consequences.
but the corrupt unions are happy because more people being classified as employees means more union members which means more dues.
I think states need to start passing laws that bar unions from being involved in the legislative process.

The new law, Assembly Bill 5, has generated outrage from a wide range of Californians, from musicians to therapists to truckers and freelance journalists.
It requires businesses to classify more workers as employees entitled to benefits like sick leave and overtime pay. But some workers affected by AB 5 say it’s caused them nothing but grief and anxiety. One online media company, Vox, parted ways with 200 freelance journalists rather than hire them as full-fledged employees.
Critics of the law are fighting back. Some have gone to court. Uber has vowed to challenge the law at the ballot box - while also changing its ride-hailing platform in an effort to have its drivers remain classified as independent contractors instead of employees.

The Sacramento Jazz Cooperative is a struggling nonprofit, operating on a shoestring budget during its three-year history as it presents Monday night concerts at the Dante Club. Now it has another problem on its hands - a controversial California labor law that requires it to hire musicians as employees.
Since Jan. 1, the jazz co-op has had to contribute to musicians’ Social Security and Medicare, while withholding payroll taxes from their checks. Founder Carolyne Swayze said the law is proving costly to the co-op and threatens its viability, potentially hurting musicians
Truckers and sign-language teachers say it robs them of freedom.
quote:
I feel like it’s our right to work as we choose,” he said. “We really need that ability to negotiate not just our time but what we’re being compensated.”
Many truckers have made a similar argument about the law, saying it inhibits their ability to do business. The California Trucking Association secured a court injunction blocking implementation of AB 5 in its industry, after it argued the law is preempted by the US Constitution because it interferes with interstate commerce.
Placerville resident Lacey Easton says she’s lost work as a professional sign-language interpreter because of AB 5. She’s down to about 15 to 20 hours of work “in a good week.”
“More importantly, deaf and hard of hearing people have lost access to communication,” said Easton, who does interpreting for schools, job-training agencies and medical appointments.
She said flexibility is extremely important in her profession; that’s why she’s resisted going to work for a company as an employee. Interpreters have to be “compatible” with the person they’re signing for, and if she’s an employee she’d lose the ability to turn down a job.

This is just further proof that democrats, though they tout being smarter than everyone in the room, are really nothing more than drooling, cheek chewers. The should not be allowed to run anything more than the local Chuck E. Cheese.

This is a symptom of them failing economics forever IMHO.
They looked at this and thought “Hey, let’s get these people benefits of being full time and make the evil corporations pay for it!”
Problem being that, much like raising the minimum wage, making it harder or more expensive to use independent contractors means you will use a lot fewer of them.
And this falls squarely on the Dems because they were told going in that this would be a disaster and they haven’t been able to spin their way out of it.

Me to DNC, burn baby burn.
I hope they lose record seats including that moron, ancient mummy Pelosi's seat.
California and America would be much better off.

No. I'd rather she keeps her seat and go down in history as the only Speaker of the House to lose the House TWICE as a result of her shitty leadership.

Hey pipe down...I’m not going there for the pizza but I have kids that like Chuck E. Cheese and so I’d like them to stay in business

Well said Teke.
Its like Seattle forcing a minimum wage and also being a sanctuary city. So illegals work and citizens become homeless, and they cant figure out why?????

I was curious a while back and looked at her last run, she won by 37 friggin points, she could literally shoot someone in the street and get reelected.

They also don't realize it would cost a single Chuck E cheese location $100k to mask up their employees. Throw in $15 wages and all these type of places either raise prices drastically or shut down.

I fully support CA keeping this law on the books. At least for the next 170 days.

some people can only be removed by time and mortality.
I think that is one reason that God limited our life span. Humanity needs turn over or we would get frozen in place by evil pricks who won't give up power.

None of these types of people will ever vote red. The only hope is for them to stay home, but we know they'll hold their noses and vote blue.

Liberals have an almost unique inability to fail to comprehend 2nd and 3rd order effects.
When liberals look at a problem, they come up with a new policy and to THEM, the world after the new policy simply MUST follow the equation...…..Tomorrow = Today + new policy.
This is why

They think those jobs just "exist". So. They'll keep existing...……..PLUS BENEIFTS!

they'll just mail ballots to illegals, they won't lose

These people are so entrenched in their leftist beliefs that even something like this will never force them to vote against these policies. Democrats are safe in CA. The only thing that would buck the system is a group of slightly less hardcore lefties de-throning the incumbents.

This is why they don’t understand shite like the Laffer Curve yet wonder why when they raise taxes they never get the exact amount they are expecting.

They also have invented dumb platitudes when forced to confront 2nd order effects.
Things like, "if I need a doctor, I don't want one only worried about money". They say this when you point out that level of compensation affects the number of people who want to do a particular thing.
It's stupid because I can guarantee you when I needed surgery and I had a top end guy handle my torn bicep, I didn't give two fricks about his reasons for being an expert surgeon.
