Best approach is the one with the least spin.
They know they can’t stop the jokes and innuendos for this so she should have said “yeah, he misspoke” and moved on. Jokes would have been made and the news cycle would move on.

Where were these 'press' folks over the last two years? How did they suddenly switch from constantly bashing Trump everyday, then the ice cream questions, and now this. I bet this is their strategy to get him out now?

When something’s really, really fricked up, they have no choice but to question. They actually did a decent job during Afghanistan. My favorite for sure is when Jenn Psaki was asked about Biden’s dog after just being destroyed all hour, you can see her thinking “Thank God, a question about the dog,” and then him just blowing that up in her face with the single most brutal question of the press conference and her face visibly saying “Oh, you mother fricker!”
Definitely the most brutal day in the press room since then, but Jenn actually had some low skills here.

To be fair to Jenn, that was an insult disguised as a question. While she didn't address the question, that's pretty much the only route she had.
