Montana lawmakers passed a bill Friday blocking downloads of TikTok, the most significant action yet by a state yet against the app. The bill, SB 419, makes it illegal for app stores to give users the option to download the app and also illegal for the company to operate within the state.

The bill does not, however, make it illegal for people who already have TikTok to use the app. A previous version of the bill sought to force internet providers to block TikTok, but that language was later removed. The bill passed by a vote of 54-43.

The bill is now headed to Gov. Greg Gianforte, a Republican, who is expected to sign it. He previously banned TikTok on government devices in Montana. Other states have enacted similar executive orders banning the app on government-owned devices and networks.

Ehh I remember when you couldnt download apps to iphones without jailbreaking them. Not sure if thats a thing or not anymore.

Or in LA you have got to go through some extra steps in accessing porn sites.

I also remember when a former President was banned on apps.

Some states you cant access the gambling apps, some you can.

Some states weed is illegal, some its legal.

My school blocked access to sites.

Sad to the the Republicans support this.

The reason the government doesn’t like TicToc is because they don’t control it.

That was only because Apple wanted to be able to regulate the apps on their operating system for security and so Apple could make sure they got their 30% cut of any revenue generated from ads or in-app purchases. Jailbreaking is still a thing if you want access to apps not authorized by Apple…like wifi hotspot apps or GPS spoofers

It sets a dangerous precedent, and it's also toothless with the widespread use of VPNs

Tic Tac is CCP mind poison.

So I understand the 'why'.

But I'm not sold on the 'how'.

Bad precedent. They'll use it against you too.
