He’s the former warden at Angola.

Any Louisiana folks have any insights? While everything in Mississippi has been improving, Mississippi’s prison system is still a mess.

Ah. The former state commissioner in Mississippi was corrupt and is in prison. The welfare scam in Mississippi would be national news if not for corona. We are fine with corruption.

While skimming off the top and using the prison as an endless supply of slave labor.

I've heard some odd things about the Angola guard/worker community near the prison. Apparently it's an entire enclave of families that are all somewhat related and have their own little weird culture.

I don't think he can run the MDOC like he did Angola. Cain won't be able to do the shite he got away with, and he won't have every Mississippi Guard under his thumb.

The biggest problem for MS DOC is funding. They have cut 215 million out of the DOC over the last 6 years. They spend 337 million compared to LA DOC 521 million. Their pay is so low they can't attract any decent officers. Keeping inmates happy with programs actually keeps violence low and saves money in the long run.

We're going to witness an influx of Cains into Mississippi. Burl Cain believes in nepotism.

Burl may well be the biggest thief in Louisiana and that's saying a lot.

Just my opinion but Tate Reeves made a mistake with the hire.

Up until I was about 18, I had the misconception that drugs and contraband simply could not make its way into a prison.

I thought Red, in Shawshank was a Hollywood creation.

I was so, so wrong.

He was one of the State's most corrupt political officials & that is saying a lot. Most of his administration consisted of one relative or another & many were charged & convicted of criminal offenses. Nepotism at its absolute worst. He resigned before any official charges were levied against him. He was famous for making State property claims to the Office of Risk Mgt, for the deaths of one of his prime beef cows. He would have a photo taken of the cow posed in one area of the prison, then same cow dragged to another area, photo taken, several time, and then a claim filed on the loss of 3-4 cows. All the money for those "losses" went to his office directly.

Interesting guy

He is absolutely the most steriotypical southern Warden ever.

If you were writing a novel and had to name a fictions warden in Louisiana you come up with the Name Burl Cain all on your own. I’ve met him and he reminds me of Pappy O’Daniels from O Brother Where Art Thou

Treated Angola like a little kingdom. It’s pretty wild. Apparently skimming money left and right. Pushes religion hard, but overall the murder rate in Angola was way down after he took over.

Just a wild guy

He can run an organization but, but his number one priority is lining his and his friends pockets.

Why don't state governments hire people from places like Netherlands or Singapore? Hiring a good ole boy won't help.
