In the months before we fled California in horror last year, three different high density apartment complexes were being built within a relatively short distance from our house. And now they want to re-zone single family neighborhoods for multi-family dwellings. Property values haven't fallen yet, but how much longer before they do?

quote:

A new California bill aims to ban single-family-home zoning, upending a century-old norm.

It's a battleground between pro-housing millennials and older Americans clutching to the status quo.

Replacing single-family homes with denser developments would chip away at the housing shortage - and eat into property values.

California is the epicenter of America's housing crisis.

For years, the Golden State just hasn't provided enough affordable homes, for the simple reason that it's just not dense enough. It's largely illegal to build anything that's not a single-family home in the state.

That just might be changing.

On Thursday, state lawmakers voted to advance Senate Bill 9, which would permit the construction of two-unit buildings on lots that have long been zoned for single-family homes. The legislation will now make its way back to the California Senate for a concurrence vote before it reaches Gov. Gavin Newsom's desk.

The irony is, that's how the Trump family fortune started... To be clear, I'm very much pro-development... But think of the Pearl clutching if this were being pushed by conservatives

Considering Cali property is about 50% inflated over the national average, I would guess it is due an adjustment in value.

Idiots.

Of course many of the ones who will flee that stupidity will vote for people who think it’s a great idea wherever they go

Oh boy, these masterpieces of design will soon dot all the west coast cities. You have to shove the third worlders ANYWHERE you can! (Minus in their home countries, of course.)

I think a lot of us would donate money to a 501(c)(3) non-profit that did nothing but pickup and bus homeless people to LA, San Fran, Portland, and Seattle.

All in the name of "helping the homeless find a better place"

would be awesome

The millenials will get older and not like being being piled up on each other. I didnt mind living in an apartment until I hit 32 y/o.

A person's mind changes when they get older about apartments unless they're on the government tit.

No problem with it as long as they re-zone the area where the politicians live first. There's no shortage of land, either, just a shortage of land in their rat-infested utopian megalopolises.

Seems like this is a problem that should work itself out. No affordable homes available? Then move elsewhere. It’s what humanity has always done.

Honestly that is probably the only way to lower housing costs in the Bay Area short of demolishing the tech economy that was built there.

San Mateo county is as NIMBY as they can get. Those progressives don’t want higher density housing even along the Caltran lines because of all the tech workers it will bring in.

The people there fought against the border wall because Trump supported it. But there is a giant wall built around those far left towns like San Francisco, San Mateo, and Burlingame. It’s called “costs of living”.

In Manhattan? Because Manhattan and LA County are nothing at all alike

They seem to be trying to get rid of single family dwellings in Bend, too.

It seems like any new housing being built is either apartments or houses with ADU's(studio apts) attached.

Well do you want to continue with the homeless because property is higher there than anywhere else in the country?

Or do you want to stay green and not build affordable housing?

California property is also high because they don't allow for much housing development. Besides it apparently needing to be single family dwelling, my understanding is a county only allows like 25% of the land to be developed (I have no idea what this number is, I saw it quite a while back).
