Outside of the Polanco and Santa Fe areas, I would still call Mexico City very affordable. I just went 8 months ago.

Are really that many Americans going to Mexico City on vacation?
I had an office in Mexico City. While I had to have an escort to and from the airport, our office was in a stupid luxury part of town with Lamborghinis and high end retail. Stores like Palacio and Liverpool are nicer than stores here. Hell, even Sears is high end there. I walked around freely and never personally felt at risk at all.
I’m also 6’2”, 250lbs… I wouldn’t send my wife on a stroll alone. Literally every local in my office had been kidnapped, raped, violently robbed, carjacked or mugged.
I could never fathom living there. Mostly because I like flushing my TP vs keeping a can next to toilet.

I don't understand the comments I've read in this thread. I suppose they had different experiences and they're not lying.
I'm with you. I went to Mexico City once and it seemed very dangerous and dirty. I have Mexican friends, no lie, that won't set foot in Mexico City because its so dangerous.

Sorry, I didn’t have an office abroad as a toddler.
We closed the office during Covid.
Mexico City is a dichotomous city. Upper class or lower class, that’s it. You drive past people living on the street into neighborhoods of extreme wealth. Literally a Lambo dealer across from the hotel I stayed at.
Beautiful and interesting stuff to see but not to wander around without a guide.

I'd still take it over Atlanta any day. Granted, I didn't go to the poor areas. The only crappy area I saw was the neighborhood(s) near the airport. I walked in the Bronx and Queens. Mexico City was a breeze compared to that.

They get to really disliking gringos, they will kill gringos.
Most of the ones there are doing it to get out of NYC and LA. Not much of a loss.

Even Mexicans don't want to live in Mexico City.
