MCCONNELL PRAISES TRUMP’S MEXICO TARIFFS AFTER EARLY CRITICISM: ‘IT WORKED’
By Henry Rodgers
06/11/2019
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell praised President Donald Trump Tuesday for threating to apply tariffs to Mexico after speaking out against the move last week.
“I think the cold, hard reality is, even though almost none of my members were enthusiastic about the prospect of tariffs, you have to give the president credit — it worked,” McConnell said, according to Politico.
A number of Republicans in the Senate stood with Trump’s decision to threat to threaten Mexico with tariffs after several party members spoke out against it. McConnell said “there is not much support” in his “conference for tariffs” and that he hoped tariffs would not be implemented last week. Other Senators also decided to speak out against Trump’s threat.

Now, what about the ones on your good in-laws in China, Mitch?
I like that Mitch was big enough to admit publicly that he was wrong. You won't find many in DC willing to do that.
To me this all points to the larger picture that our leadership isn't good at effective negotiations because they aren't willing to risk short-term loss (especially re-elections) for long-term gains.

This. Mexico moved (capitulated) because they believed Trump would impose tariffs. Most in DC don't understand this or unwilling to understand. They, i.e. the swamp see it (and everything) thru a political constituency lens.

Paging IB Freeman, who will rail against tariffs even though there is ample evidence that Trump's threats worked.
That's because most politicians (on both sides of the aisle) don't do business in the real world. They're used negotiating with someone else's money (tax dollars). If they negotiate a bad deal, who gives a shite? Just raise more taxes to cover the loss.
From the very beginning Trump has understood and acted from the position that the US holds the most leverage at any negotiating table. Mexico needs the US as an ally far more than the US needs Mexico. Trump is simply just leveraging the immense weight of the US to get fair deals with other countries.

More than that, it was the understanding that the person making the threat would actually follow though that was the real tool.

That depends on if you consider Taiwan as being China.
Wasn't it reported that Mexico had agreed to make immigration enforcement changes before Trump threatened tariffs?

The common playbook in Washington with negotiations is:
- Promise I'm going to make a deal (Thereby removing the threat of me walking away from a bad one)
- Promise I won't impose punishments on the other side (thereby removing any downside to them making outrageous demands or reniging)
Then get surprised when I'm forced into a bad deal, and try and dress it up like its acceptable.
