quote:

Matthew Yglesias, the author of “One Billion Americans: The Case for Thinking Bigger,” thinks it would be great if America were that populous. He also admits that there’s no real political constituency for such a policy. Conservatives think the country is already full, he notes, while liberals tend to think the same thing about their own towns and cities.

He wrote a book about why the US needs one billion people and that we’ll never keep the largest economy without more people because China will overtake us. And that we need to promote more childbirths as well as open immigration more.

The world has far, far too many people. The last thing we need is MORE. I was listening to something about this book and all of them were arguing that we need to promote childbirth so that people have more, but if you think we are destroying the planet and pollute too much the last thing we need is more people doing it. It seems like such a horrible idea (same with every country that promotes childbirth not just the US).

Over half of the current 350 million are mentally disturbed or fricking retards. Or both.

So no we don’t need 3X that

Eh. Maybe. But you have to keep in mind many US companies are already either moving back stateside or to other lower income countries. China created a problem for itself by raising its real wages.

I remember many years ago ('90s) hearing the president of Bard College say we should have a far bigger population and he would have no problem w/more US cities becoming like Calcutta

I wouldn’t overestimate the number that are moving back to the states. It’s happening but manufacturing is going to be primarily in Asia or Mexico.

I’m not. I’m stating that US companies are finding it too costly to remain in China and hence are either moving back to the US to lower transportation costs or move to another LDC to take advantage of lower wages.

We would have to re-evaluate our EPA restrictions if we’re going to have that many people flood into our country/cities.

With around 350 million people, we've already got a pretty bad homeless problem.

I don't think the 50 million or so productive citizens we have can support a billion freeloaders

Anyone who argues that overpopulation is an issue has never been on a plane. There is a ridiculous amount of open land out there still, even omitting farmland.

As if land is the primary factor to consider when discussing overpopulation?

Bull. All we need is God to continue blessing our economy, keep peaceful foreign relations and get rid of sociopathic left wingers trying to self sabotage. We compete well across the board with other countries which is not the product of a massive population, it's the byproduct of a good group of thinking and innovative Americans.
