Kind of like if a tree falls in the woods...

If a bomb goes off in Beruit, does anyone really notice...

It’s funny how we PoliBoarders educated in the sciences always look a little deeper than “hey, that’s a big damned explosion”.

Yeah, but "Lebanese" includes about 40% Christian, Muslims (roughly 25 to 27% Sunni and Shi'a, each), and 5% Druze, plus about a dozen other demoninations in relatively small numbers, including Jews.

Definitely fireworks or ammunition going off prior to the huge explosion.

Actually appears to be a fireworks factory that blew up. You can see fireworks going off prior to the huge explosion in this video and another from further away.

How the person who took this video survived is amazing.

Beirut is the capital and largest city in Lebanon.
Hezbollah is a militant group which serves as the de-facto government and military of Lebanon and has far more power than the official government and military which are extremely weak and divided on religious and sectarian lines (Lebanon has a sizable Christian minority as well as a massive Palestinian expat community and untold numbers of refugees from the Iraq War, Syrian Civil War, and Civil War in The Yemon).

Hezbollah is essentially an Iranian proxy and is openly hostile and antagonistic towards Israel with stated goals of peace through annihilating Israel.

Israel and Hezbollah have fought multiple skirmishes and wars over the past 30 years.

America and Israel are, for better or worse, joined at the hip.

I know. That's part of my point. It was a very thriving "multicultural" place, until one of those cultures decides to go whack job. Of course, I know you could argue that speaks to YOUR point.

I am well aware of all the shite you posted... It doesn't mean that WE have a damn bit on interest there or should be involved in it at all...

Let the ME do the ME... We need to stay the hell out of it...

A large portion of the color of an explosion like that is based on the color of the most frangible material around the site of the explosion. Although it is possible that part of this red coloring is characteristic of a specific set of precursor/explosive content or that explosion mixing chemically with the environment, most likely is that the explosion occurred in an area with reddish orange soil.

And as I muse on it more, a red brick building going up could be the source of all that color, too.

I can see all the small explosions, but that big one was a hell of a detonation. I don't know what could have caused that.

Gun powder deflagrates when ignited, unless confined in a closed system. That was a detonation. Not sure what types of storage systems are involved in fireworks manufacturing.

Bill Kristol is sporting wood now. Dreaming of Moar AWATALAD (Any War at Any Time in Any Location for Any Duration), and more US kids getting those cool metal ping pong legs.

Could have been an ammunition factory just as easily as a fireworks factory...

OR it could have been a baby milk factory too...

I find it difficult to believe there would be a "fireworks factory" in the middle of freaking Beirut. Hell, it's even hard to fathom that a ship full of them would stop there.
