Mark Steyn on UK vs. USA crime
I'm reading my 2nd Mark Steyn book and he's got some interesting comparisons between the US and the UK re: crime.
It's true that murder rates in the US are higher. But I didn't know that all other crimes rates are higher in the UK... burglary, car theft, rape, assault, etc.

The reason is because criminals assess risk. And the risk of getting shot while you're committing crime in the UK is almost zero.

Aside from strict gun laws, Brits who actually have a gun won't use it because they know they'll go to jail for shooting a criminal.

'In America it's not only your right to shoot someone burglarizing your home. It's your duty. It's totally different in the UK.'

This has also caused criminals in the UK to commit 'hot' burglaries at a 50% rate. That means half of the time the home owner is at home and is confronted by the thief. In the US hot burglaries are rare. They wait till you're not at home.

'Your govt loves guns. That's why they want the exclusive right to use them.'

Sounds quite logical to me.

He's also pointed out that other countries do not include suicides in their gun violence statistics while America does.

Mark Steyn is incredibly smart and I find him to be hilarious. He always has me in stitches when I see him on Tucker's show. Also, his accent is great.

Are 50% of the murders committed by 6-7% of the population in Europe?

It would be interesting to see where the US ranked in murder statistics if that 6-7% committed crime at the rate of the rest of the country.

Its actually a lot less than that. The 6-7% would be counting all black males from infants to the ones in nursing homes.

I would imagine that their stats are similar to ours where one group commits 99% of the crime
