Here is what I hate about the "racist insult" reporting in an altercation.
First: this may not be relevant in the OP situation
Now, when people get in an altercation, the tendency is to "insult" the other person. And, of COURSE you will use the epithets of the opponent in all ways.
If a fat person gets in a fight with you, you will say "you fat-arse mother fricker..." In general, you aren't out there looking to offend fat people.
If we get in a fight, you may say "you fricking neeger a-hole..". It has little to do with "black" and everything to do with the fight.
I loathe the reporting where there is an altercation and the racial epithet is suggested as motivation of the argument. In fact, it is most often the result of some other reason for the skirmish.
If someone cuts you off when driving, you may flip the bird. It is not like you flip the bird at ALL drivers...just that one that offended you.

As a bit of a footnote to that, last night the wife and I were having dinner and we happened to switch the TV over to the CBS Evening News for the first time in forever. Eventually the story of the Times Square shooting came on and, knowing who the shooting suspect is (Farrakhan Muhammad), I didn't say anything to my wife except "see if they mention anything about the shooter".
They didn't. Not a single word. Not a name, not any sort of description, nothing. Norah O'Donnell mentioned only his victims.
It all goes back to the 1619 Project and the foundational belief that everything in the US is built on "systemic racism" so pointing out anything negative done by anyone not white is just participating in that systemic racism.
