I also have personally experienced a number of leftist family members who only became rabid in their beliefs when they became atheists. It was as though they had traded their religion for a new leftist religion and showed all the vehemence in their views of a born again Christian.
Atheism by necessity removes the preconditions for moral absolutes and meaning in life, along with the basis for intrinsic human value and dignity, logic/reason, and the inductive principle. They have no basis for the very reality that they find themselves in.
In such a worldview, it's quite justifiable to act in any way you wish, believing anything you want, and treating others however you want to treat them without a notion of ultimate justice or purpose. Rejecting Christ literally makes you a fool because you have no philosophical basis for the necessity of truth.
