Maine bans Native American mascots in all state schools
LINK

Grab some tissues before you start reading:

“While Indian mascots were often originally chosen to recognize and honor a school’s unique connection to Native American communities in Maine, we have heard clearly and unequivocally from Maine tribes that they are a source of pain and anguish,” Mills said at the bill’s signing.

Thursday's signing comes two months after Mills signed another piece of legislation to replace Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples Day.

As someone who is 1/4 Native American (Navajo), do these fricks not realize that they’re actually insulting to NAs by banning any school from honoring them by making them a mascot?

All these hurt people by things that literally have no impact on their lives are so disinteresting to me.

Let me know when Fighting Irish, Ragin Cajuns, Celtics, etc., are controversial.

Even Demon Deacons, Saints, Friars, etc.

Until then it’s hypocrisy.

frick them.

Without Columbus coming here, who knows what this area would be today. It's a holiday we established on behalf of one of our own coming over here. The "indigenous" (it's not like they sprouted out the ground here, they fricking walked across the ice) have nothing to do with it.

Maine (originally as part of Massachusetts) was probably the first state to wipe all of the natives completely out.

Looks like they are continuing the tradition

These guys should really check Broken Bow Oklahoma where the sizable amount of Natives who go to school there chose the name "Savages" for their own mascot.

No. They heard from a few whiners who loudly pretend to speak for everybody in their group

Pretty soon, they will be bred out of existence, all references to them scrubbed and forbidden, and they will cease to exist in the popular imagination. Like the people of Atlantis. At least there won't be any more pain and anguish.

Yup

In a few hundred years, talking about Native Americans will be like talking about Woolly Mammoths. You'll know they were here, but, no one will care.

I mean, let's be blunt here.

When world history books are written 1000 years from now, there will be effectively no reason to mention native Americans at all.
