I'm not surprised. Trump is an absolutely horrible judge of character. The majority of his staffing, political appointments, and endorsements are to either people who have no clue what to do, actively work against him and his agenda, or are just grifters like Cawthorn.
Every now and then the stars align and he picks the right person, but they are few and far between. It's been his downfall since before he was even sworn in.

He is in my district (but tried to change districts) dude is a fraud and something seems off with him. He is no different that a Crenshaw, he will say what he thinks you want to hear to get elected. Dude did nothing in congress
