For the sake of the discussion let’s just assume that the free energy machine actually exist. What would our economy look like if we took the oil and gas industry down to a small industry?

It would depend on who controlled the machine. Whomever controls an unlimited source of energy would control the world.

I was going to say it depended on how fast the chinese could steal the design specs.

It would be pared down for sure, but we still need hydrocarbon-derived chemicals.

BTW, they've proven the theory behind that concept very much worked.

Like anything that happens in the world there would be a major adjustment period, and there would be a long and drawn out phasing out process depending on how and what kind of energy the machine produced.
I’m guessing third world countries wouldn’t be first in line to get a free energy machine

Well, Louisiana's economy would cease to exist.

Its the earth itself. We use the natural electromagnetism of the earth to generate microwave electricity that is airborn via an antenna system.
No fuels. No plants. Just constant streams of renewable energy is the concept.

THere have been countless engineers that have taken the theory and applied it and it worked. There was a show on Discovery just saturday night that did it.

Worthless topic at the moment - too many "what ifs".

Truck nuts would be placed on the Endangered Species list.
All kidding aside, energy is a natural resource and the human drive is to control resources important to us (food, water, shelter - with the move from an agrarian society energy production is a mandatory component for all these). If this particular resource were to ever become plentiful to the point of being taken for granted it would change the very foundation of world economics.

I assume some jobs will have to be kept for upkeep.

Still need a way to distribute the energy.
