Chris Licht, the embattled and besieged C.E.O. of CNN, was never the most obvious candidate to helm a global news organization. Sixteen months ago, when I broke the news that David Zaslav had tapped Licht to run the network, I noted that he didn’t seem tailor-made for the job. Licht had a reputation as a wunderkind producer who could work with elite talent, yes, and he was aligned with John Malone’s rich older guy Big Sky vision of recalibrating the network’s politics to its centrist origins. But Licht’s C.V. consisted of programming a few hours of morning or late-night talk television with one or two or three principals, not the management or operational experience that might prepare him for overseeing a 24-hour, multi-billion-dollar, 4,000-person cable network in need of strong strategic leadership, not to mention new business and distribution models.

Now, after a year of leadership missteps, programming misfires, a disastrous Trump town hall and the near-total decimation of staff morale in the wake of a chilling all-access Atlantic story, Licht will be vacating the C.E.O. position. I’m told that Warner Bros. Discovery will soon announce that Licht will be stepping down as chairman and C.E.O. of CNN, ostensibly bringing an end to one of the most turbulent periods in the network’s 43-year history.

He was trying to dial it toward a little more news and a little less propaganda.

I guess the left just doesn't want that.

The Trump town hall was like the highest rated show on CNN in 5 years.

Just shows that making money is second to ideology.

So a "news" channel is more concerned about the "news" they cover and how, instead of ratings. Am I understanding that right??

Its interesting how the media openly refers to the Trump town hall as "disastrous" for them. The veil slips further off...

IT's the business model of the new America. Profits are no longer the goal. If you disseminate the Marxist propaganda, then you will be propped up/subsidized by the Federal gov't with taxpayer money. If you don't, then you are on your own and you may get a knock on the door by some brown shirts who will bring you through the fed court system to financially drain you or your entity of every last penny you own even though you are only guilty of disagreeing with the gov't.

Do they define how it was “disastrous?”

I’m assuming their employees were “literally shaking”

Pfizer basically subsidized CNN in 2020 and 2021.

What was disastrous about it? You're supposed to be a news station. The only thing you should be concerned about are the ratings you get from it.

Man remember those days?

I wonder how long this can last? Eventually you have to make money.

so this is why it leaked out that he told Trump what he would tell anyone-Have fun.

they humanized Trump. the goal (according to DeSantis supporters Lachlan, Paul Ryan & Murdoch) is to dehumanize Trump.

He's no fan of conservatives, that's for sure so I imagine he'll have his pick of gigs before 2024 gets here.

That the head of a news organization was ousted because he deigned to allow the leading candidate of an opposition party airtime is mind-boggling.
