Most of you know my feelings about John Bel Edwards. Most you know how I feel about the income tax being applied fairly and how I feel about corporate welfare disguised as tax credits like the film tax credits.
All that said, I would be remiss if I did not call out a special tax treatment that will benefit a LOT of Louisiana tax payers. It is a tax credit for those that make contributions to organizations giving scholarships to poor families to go to private schools. Like this organization LINK.
It is a no brainer if you have Louisiana tax obligations above $10,000 and a very good deal for all tax payers.
You get a tax credit---not a deduction but an actual credit--for 95% of the amount of your donation to such organization. There are 4 listed on the the DOE website LINK.
What is even better is that since the scholarship organizations are 501(c)(3) organization you can deduct your contribution from your federal taxes. An example: Suppose you donate $10000 to one of the organizations. You will get a $9500 tax credit that you can use over 3 years in Louisiana. So it will cost you $500 but you also get the deduction on your federal taxes. Suppose your tax rate is 32%. You would save $3200 in taxes.
This year the feds have limited state income and property tax deductions to $10000 so if you have taxes that high this is a no brainer. What you are doing is lowering your non deductible state taxes while raising your deductible 501(c)(3) contributions.
Now I would prefer things like film credits, this credit program, enterprise zone credits, and government class pension tax exemptions disappear but if they are going to carve out all these exceptions it is time they gave all taxpayers some.

Look who supports honor code now!
Trump broke you!

Wrong. I wouldn't vote for him with your vote.
I suspect once this gets out the education bureaucracy will scream and he will reverse it next session.
It is really amazing how little attention this credit program has gotten. I was the first one to mention it to my CPA and now that he knows about it he is telling all his clients.

Are you asking for donations for a nonprofit you’re involved with? Why specifically list any organization?
Posted on 8/2/18 at 7:05 am to Proximo
No I am not asking.
I just found about this last week from a post on the money thread.
It is a huge tax savings. There are four organizations I believe that you can donate to and get the credit. They are the second link.

Either you are lying or you have a horrible “CPA”.

His CPA must live under a rock. And every CPA in LA isn’t pushing their clients into this. JBE could pivot on this at any given point in time just like he did on the movie credits. You’ll have egg on your face the moment they put an annual cap on this credit just like they did the movie credits. Proceed with caution...

JBE is good . He hasn't been a terrible governor nor a great one. If Landry is the other choice I will vote for JBE.

What are you giving the OP a cheers for? He's still not voting for JBE and still thinks he's a corrupt pos.

You know JBE is shitty when you're bending over to call him mediocre to avoid acknowledging what a failure he's been.
He's the political twin of Edwin Edwards that's doubling down on everything that is holding this state back.
He's had nearly 3 years as Governor and nothing to show for it and our economy is still in the shitter while the rest of the south is up and roaring.

Just checking in to say frick JBE and I support (insert any candidate that is not JBE) for Governor.

I agree but lets make sure it's a good and legit conservative candidate that won't make the sky screaming pussies on the right to double down on the Republican for Edwards bullshite.
With that said, I will vote for Jeff Landry with no hesitation at all against JBE.

He can't pivot until the next session.
Also there is a VERY big difference between these credits and the film maker welfare. These credits cannot be transferred and cannot be redeemed for cash. They can only be used for tax obligations.
I agree they may not last through the next session but they are there for 2018 and I will do my best not to pay a single dollar in state income taxes because they are there.

Well I am not lying.
When did you first hear of it?? Didn't it just become law in June?

Assuming any of this money actually makes it to scholarship recipients, how can you justify not educating the poors?

I am not sure what point you are making but I did talk with two of the three presently approved to accept the contributions that will result in the tax credit. Both said that if they fail to fund after a certain period they must remit the donations to the state. The credit to the tax payers is not impacted.

Just like when Trump does good things the liberals twist it. JBE is not as bad as vilified on this forum. Jindal left him a financial mess and the legislators have fought him politically over everything. Show me a better option and I'm with you. Landry is not that guy.
Posted on 8/2/18 at 10:47 am to iron banks
JBE does not have the best interest of taxpaying citizens in mind.
There is no question about that.
Jindal--who I did not like--did in fact look after the taxpayers. JBE always puts government ahead of the state.

You should always measure executives by economic and fiscal growth and JBE has not delivered at all on this.
The Louisiana economy is still in the shitter while the rest of the deep south is doing much better.
Thanks to him, we have the largest and highest levels of spending in our states history with absolutely nothing to show for it and we're also now one of the highest taxed states in the country with also nothing for it as well.
JBE cares about growing government, not looking out for the taxpayer.

He's actually been worse than Jindal on this topic.

Maybe if JBE hadn't insisted the republican legislature pick a democrat as their speaker instead of settling on a compromise choice, he would have an easier time there?
He made his bed there and has to lie in it.
