Kobe Bryant, a devout catholic, attended mass before the crash

On Sunday, basketball legend Kobe Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter Gianna, and seven others, including a teammate of Gianna’s and her parents, were tragically killed in a helicopter accident in California.
Bryant, a devout Catholic, reportedly attended mass the morning of the accident
quote:
As noted by Catholic News Agency (CNA), Bryant, who was raised Catholic, credited his faith and the help of a Catholic priest for allowing him to overcome major personal stumbles.
In 2003, Bryant was accused of raping a 19-year-old woman in a Colorado hotel room. The basketball star admitted to cheating on his wife and engaging in the sexual encounter, but has always denied the allegation of rape.
quote:
“When the allegation became public, Bryant lost sponsors and faced criminal charges, which were eventually dropped,” CNA reported. “Bryant issued an apology to his accuser, with whom he also reached a settlement in a civil lawsuit.”
“Although I truly believe this encounter between us was consensual, I recognize now that she did not and does not view this incident the same way I did. After months of reviewing discovery, listening to her attorney, and even her testimony in person, I now understand how she feels that she did not consent to this encounter,” the 2004 apology from Bryant read.
quote:
“What I came to understand, coming out of Colorado, is that I had to be me, in the place where I was at that moment,” the NBA legend told GQ in 2015.
“The one thing that really helped me during that process—I’m Catholic, I grew up Catholic, my kids are Catholic—was talking to a priest,” he added.
quote:
“It was actually kind of funny: He looks at me and says, ’Did you do it?’ And I say, ’Of course not.’ Then he asks, ’Do you have a good lawyer?’ And I’m like, ’Uh, yeah, he’s phenomenal.’ So then he just said, ’Let it go. Move on. God’s not going to give you anything you can’t handle, and it’s in his hands now. This is something you can’t control. So let it go.’ And that was the turning point,” recalled Bryant.
quote:
In the wake of the fatal accident, fellow Catholic and singer Cristina Ballestero posted about an encounter she had with Bryant at Holy Family Cathedral in Orange, California, during a weekday Mass.
“As we went up to communion, [Bryant] waited for me to go. If you grew up in the Catholic Church, you understand this is a respectful thing men do in church as a sign of respect to women. He said I have a beautiful voice,” Ballestero wrote in the post, adding, “His most inspiring trait was his decision to turn to his faith in God and receive God’s mercy and to be a better man after a regretful decision.”

Had no idea he was a devout Catholic. That service must've been super early because he was already at the OC airport before 9am.

I believe a lot of churches, especially busy ones, will have about a 5AM mass.

Has the media not connected Trump to this tragedy yet?

Weird thoughts about the incident. I didn’t do it but took months to realizes why she thinks you did it.

I remember Hannity was a staunch defender of Kobe during that shitshow

5am and 7am mass services are pretty common.

7am is pretty normal for an early mass on Sundays, 6am on weekdays. It's possible some churches have an even earlier mass, just depends on the demands of the congregation.

I think he probably realized the power dynamic angle of it. Same reason male bosses can't be boning female employees even if it's "consensual."
And thank you for the article/quotes... no one is going to go through life being the perfect person, particularly not the perfect father, husband, or man. But, what IS telling about someone's character is how they respond, grow, and learn from those mistakes and eventually become a role model and example to others in how to live a Christian lifestyle.
Whether he raped that woman or not is irrelevant now... he's dead. But what is relevant is the forgiveness he received both from himself and from God, and that he moved forward in life in a Godly way, and it seems that he did.

6:45am Sunday Mass according to the Web site.
Awesome to know such public figures give time to God and the Sacraments when the world tells us money and fame will replace that spiritual need.

I have stated on numerous occasions that I am an Atheist. But, I sincerely hope that this brings a measure of comfort and peace to any of his family and friends who are believers.

Catholics have no sense of what pleases the Lord. It’s always something that pleases man that they think will in turn please the Lord.

Hi, bigot. Very Christ like of you to say that.
I'm sure protestant Jesus reached down for a high five on that zinger. Catholic Jesus must be shook.

Refreshing to know he humbled himself before his Maker before meeting him moments later.

That's the gamble isn't it? Try to convince yourself magic exists, because if you are wrong, the guy who created you with those thoughts and logic condemns you to eternal torture, even though he knew ahead of time what you were going to do because god "has a plan". If you go to hell, it was part of his plan.

A priest buddy of mine is friends with Kobe's pastor and had messaged a group of us this.
His reminder was it is a great comfort to our families if we are unexpectedly called home to know we were at Mass so soon before. Go to Mass, go to Mass, go to Mass.
If you are a believer, please live your life as such. If you are a non-believer please seek truth. At the end of life we only end up in one of two places, heaven or hell.
