Kasim Reed is setting his sights on something he’s familiar with: being Atlanta mayor.
The former two-term mayor has filed paperwork Wednesday to join the mayoral race after Keisha Lance Bottom announced she will not run for a second term.
We’re working to learn more and get reaction throughout the day on Channel 2 Action News
Reed joins Atlanta City Councilman Antonio Brown, Atlanta attorney Sharon Gay and Atlanta City Council president Felicia Moore, who have all filed paperwork to join the race.
Reed was mayor of Atlanta from 2010 to 2018.
In his first sit-down interview in three-and-a-half years, Reed answered questions from Channel 2's Dave Huddleston about City Hall, the federal corruption case and talk that he wants to get back into politics.
“I felt like there are things happening in Atlanta that I’d never seen in my life, and I’ve been here all my life. So that’s what caused me to start talking about it,” Reed said.
Things like the city’s rising crime rate has affected just about everyone in the city from Buckhead to Bankhead.
“I do know how to fix crime, and I do know I could turn our crime environment around in 180 days, and I know that I’ve done it before,” Reed continued.

Thought he was still under investigation for like serious federal crimes.

Does that make two of three Atlanta mayoral candidates now either under indictment or investigation?

My take-
Felicia Moore v. Reed is going to be interesting.
Neither are particularly woke by modern standards. Both will probably campaign on keeping the crazies in check and on law and order. Reed is anti-police but more out of a corruption/power struggle way than a "defund" way. Moore is obviously friendly with police. Moore is about openness and ethics and Reed is about keeping the lid on the city through cronyism.
Plus, they absolutely despise each other! Reed should be in prison so I'm for Moore. I just hope Reed doesn't push Moore too far toward the left because they exist in some of the same space.

Not at all.
She actually makes me long for the days of Kasim Reed.

Of course he did. Has all the requirements covered for Atlanta mayor.

Where most job applications frown on having criminal indictments, it's actually a pre-requisite for being Atlanta Mayor.
Sorry, I don't have any current indictments, but I pledge that in my first month on the job, I will take care of it!
KLB takes her husband to Super Bowl in first month on the job, using state funds. Good job, Keeeeesha!

If Atlanta residents were smart, it would be Moore in a landslide.

Reed is also better than Felicia Moore or any of the other current choices. His 8 years were some of the best this city has had post 1970.

Possible but I'm not sure how you can say that confidently. Reed was openly antagonistic to the police and APD were underfunded during his tenure, leading to many of our problems today. He didn't replace officers or grow the force at the rate needed.
He also happened to be in office during the glory days of diminishing crime in big cities and urban rejuvenation, and I would argue he benefitted from that more than causing any of it. Reed wasn't hostile toward business interests and embraced (or got out of the way of) a lot of good things happening in Atlanta at the time. But I think if you survey the country those things were happening everywhere, major cities, smaller cities, etc.

We don't need another female that nobody is going to respect or listen to. That experiment should die with Bottoms. Though I will say Franklin wasn't awful but she wasn't good either.

Reed got results. He is the lone person all the black establishment in the city blame for all the evil awful 'Gentrification' that happened under his watch. That right there tells me all I need to know. Reed is pro business and he is pro revitalization/growth of the intown neighborhoods.

He was openly antagonistic to police corruption and police officers who would get the city sued and have to pay large settlements. Reed is pro police. He is not a defund the police type.

Shirley Franklin started that mess. Reed left with more officers than he inherited. He was a net positive in that respect.
Reed also had a decent relationship with Nathan Deal. No reason he won't carry that over to Gump Kemp. Bottoms has no relationship with well....anyone because everyone hates her.

Maybe Clark Howard will finally decide to run for mayor.

Don't think he lives in the city limits anymore.
