It was punted back to the lower courts. It was neither a win nor a loss for Trump but it benefits Trump because it won't be resolved before the election. The whole point of this exercise by the Democrats was to get his tax returns released before the election so that they could use it as a weapon against his reelection. This ruling deprives them of that opportunity.

Well, like with Muh Russia, muh Collusion, etc... they overplayed their hand. They know that now that they got their "win", all of their candidates taxes are now open for discovery. This, they categorically do not want.
Everything the left accuses Trump of doing, they themselves, have done so. That's how they got the idea. They assume everyone is as dirty as they are.

For one of the few times, they're right on both accounts. SCOTUS punted. I'd say the 7-2 decision shows that the conservative justices knew this would further stall the president from having to turn over his tax returns.

Trump unambiguously lost on his first line of defense/argument. Now, he gets to make his secondary and tertiary arguments, and he gets to do that in a way that puts the entire matter "off" until after the election.
So, a long-term loss (in part) but a short-term, tactical victory.

today's decision was a pure punt, remanded back to the lower court
