Youngkin attended Rice University on a basketball scholarship, playing four NCAA Division I seasons with Rice Owls men's basketball in the Southwest Conference where he totaled 82 points and 67 rebounds in his career. In 1990, he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in managerial studies and a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering. He earned a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Harvard Business School in 1994.
