quote:

Column: Thanks to Trump, we have an epidemic of unqualified candidates

quote:

One of the most damaging legacies of the Trump presidency may be that it persuaded people with absolutely no qualifications that they could and should run for public office — and that at least some of the time, Americans might be foolish enough to vote for them.

quote:

After all, that was the clear takeaway from Donald Trump’s 2016 victory, wasn’t it? That you don’t need to be smart or experienced or level-headed or decent to win an election. You don’t need a rationale or a plan. You just need money, chutzpah and too much personality.

quote:

None of these dilettante candidates has held public office, and none of them is willing to start at the beginning in local politics. Why should they? School boards and city councils are for little people. Not for Trump hangers-on, retired fat cats and movie stars!

Seriously how do people not understand that career politicians are what is actually wrong with this country!

Biggest mistake the founders did was not instituting term limits

They live in bubbles and have little experience in the world outside of it. They believe what they are told of the outside world and do not question it.

Let me tell you something. I know and work with a lot of legislators in Louisiana and Georgia as well as the congressional delegations. They are by and large all idiots. Republicans/Democrats.. it doesn't really matter. Congress and state legislatures are filled with people who were really popular in high school, but also really dumb. They don't understand the systems they are making laws to govern, and they only listen to people who parrot their own ideology who have money.

No decisions on governance are made on reason or data.

Yes, the thing this country needs is more career politicians, smh - what a craptastic, insular bubble these coastal elite fart-sniffers inhabit.

There’s a reason the founders had a vision of serving your country for a few years then going back home to your business or profession. I suspect we’d all be in a much better place today had we held to those ideals.

This wouldn't solve as many problems as people think it would. Let's say instead of someone spending twenty years in the Senate we have term limits of two terms per office. You would have someone spending four years as a member of the House, then they would simply run for the Senate instead of a third term in the House. Once in the Senate they serve eight years there. That is twelve years of being a schmuck in Congress. Then after their time in the Senate they get a position in the Cabinet for eight years under some president. Then they get put on a presidential ticket that wins and they are VP for eight years. Then they run for President and win. They could still spend over 30 years in influential positions in Washington, maybe more if they bounced from one cabinet position to another, even with term limits. There are just so many different positions they can pinball around in Washington. If you need further proof, two words--John Kerry.

They need to earn their stripes bartending first.

Eta: I'll give the article a little credit. They do mention AOC.

If they are American and they meet the age requirement for their office, then they are qualified to run.

You guys know that we don't necessarily see eye to eye on lots of issues, but the party system and the media do not get to decide for the people who represents the people.

Americans might be foolish enough to vote for them

Disgusting sentiment.

Neither of these has been a pre-requisite for holding office as an elected official.

F*ck this writer, he has too much chutzpah and not enough personality.

Yeah right! But a community organizer who rose from state legislator to junior senator to U.S. President in five years. Oh yeah, the gravitas can't be argued with.
