Slavery. Good for him. I’ve seen so many on this board disagree and laugh at anyone saying the cause of the war was slavery. Glad to see that Sessions is not ignorant on this issue.
——————————————-
Attorney General Jeff Sessions said slavery and not state's rights or economic differences led to the bloodiest war ever fought on American soil.
Speaking at the Abraham Lincoln Foundation of the Union League of Philadelphia's annual Lincoln Day Celebration, the former Alabama Senator dismissed the idea that the Civil War was more about state's deciding their own destinies than it was about slavery.
"The thing was brewing from the beginning of the Republic," Sessions said. "Though many Southerners try to say otherwise - and I love my people - slavery was the cause of the war. It was not states' rights or tariffs or agrarian versus industrial economies. Those issues were all solvable and would have been solved. The cloud, the stain of human bondage - the buying and selling of human beings - was the unsolvable problem and was omnipresent from the beginning of the country.
"And the failure, the refusal of the South to come to grips with it, really to actually change this immoral system of enslavement led to the explosion," Sessions said. "As to slavery, it had to end. The nation could stand the disgrace no longer."

Sorry Jeff (and I like JS) but this is incorrect.

Sounds like someone sure whipped him into shape.

it was a bit more complex than either A or B

Good thing we have you here to snow flake about the board.

Looks like you’re the one snow flaking.

The brainwashing and propaganda campaign the Daughters of the Confederacy have been running for decades is quite impressive. For it to be 2018 and people still deny the Civil War being about slavery is dumbfounding. Props to Sessions for recognizing that, which in itself is kind of a sad to give props to someone for recognizing something so obvious.

No I’m not actually. I don’t really care what the other people on the board think about the civil war but you were triggered enough to post how upset it makes you.

I anxiously await your next concern troll thread probably about trump because you obviously are an easily triggered person.

Fine. It is a constant topic on this board and a mark of sheer stupidity. So, it is noteworthy when Jeff Sessions tells the truth about the cause of the war.
But, you don’t care so why even bother posting? Move along.

It was over slavery but not for the reason people think.

The propaganda campaign of the Daughters of the Confederacy and other allies was and remains “fake news” to the utmost. It is shocking how successful they were in promoting “Lost Cause” ideology. As a descendent of Confederate soldiers and slave owners, I find it all pretty ridiculous. You can make a strong case that not everyone marched off to war to support and defend slavery. Many fought for their home, family, county, and state, as is true in every war. But, the cause of the war was clearly a defense of and promotion of slavery.

This.
However, the economics of slave owning were constantly changing and some theorize that the practice would have died out completely even without the war.
That being said, the issue had the country as primed as it could be and was a powder keg waiting to go off. It was going to blow one way or another.

Depends on the underlying reasons.
The north didnt care about setting blacks free as much as crippling those who opposed the huge taxes on goods manufactured in the north from resources from the south.

I have no disagreement with slavery being the cause of the civil war. The problem I do have is how jackasses like you lay all the blame on the south. The Federal government did not have the power to outlaw slavery, even in New states and territories without an amendment to the Constitution. And anyone who thinks that the north gave a rats arse about slaves and slavery, other than for monetary reasons, is a fool.

I have never understood so many peoples need to divorce slavery from the reasons behind the civil war.

I never understood why people could make the claim that slavery wasn't a preeminent cause of the war, if not the primary cause, when the articles of secession from numerous states mention slavery explicitly. The word slavery is mentioned 6 times in the South Carolina articles, 23 times in the Georgia articles, and 3 times in the Mississippi articles, but within one of the most explicit statements in any of the articles.
I'm willing to believe that there were structural issues within the early Republic, or underlying economic issues, but these are primary source documents which clearly spell out the reasons for secession. Unless people argue that the reasons for secession are distinct from the reasons for the war.
I'm honestly asking for the reasoning.
quote:
Our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery-- the greatest material interest of the world. Its labor supplies the product which constitutes by far the largest and most important portions of commerce of the earth. These products are peculiar to the climate verging on the tropical regions, and by an imperious law of nature, none but the black race can bear exposure to the tropical sun. These products have become necessities of the world, and a blow at slavery is a blow at commerce and civilization.
