A White House-backed prison reform bill advanced in the House on Wednesday after winning bipartisan support in a 25-5 House Judiciary Committee vote.

The bill, called the First Step Act, seeks to offer more funding for prison programs and incentivize prisoners to complete the programs in an attempt to reduce the likelihood of inmates committing new crimes once released from prison.

And in another effort to win over Democratic supporters, the bill does include language creating more opportunities for prisoners to earn time credits by completing prison programs. They can then use those credits to serve the remaining days of their sentence in a halfway house or home confinement.

The bill, which authorizes $50 million a year for five years for the Bureau of Prisons to spend on programs like job training and education that reduce recidivism, clarifies current law to allow prisoners up to 54 days of credit for good behavior annually. The law was previously interpreted as only allowing prisoners to earn 47 days a year.

This is a positive step. Good for Trump and Kushner.

Seems like a good bill, but I am sure the resident libs will be here shortly to tell us why it is terrible.

Not sure what you are talking about. Sounds like a positive bill. We, as a society, want people to transition from crime and incarceration to productive lives.

No idea if it would work, but at least it's worth a try. Recidivism is such a huge problem.

it's amazing how cheap it is to possibly receive such great rewards

Dems want to keep black men locked up and uneducated.

Sad!

This feels like an inadequate dollar figure to fix these issues, but a large enough figure to materially change the lives of the people that run a lot these prisons.

For that reason, I'm skeptical any of this money is used properly and that we see no actual benefits from it.

The $50M caught my eye too. I think we're still under 2 million federal inmates.

102 federal prisons.. about $500k per prison. Doesn't cost a ton to create education and training classes. Should be possible.

But haven't we had programs in place? What's the extra money for exactly? More and better programs I guess.

more programs is my guess. more training for those working the programs to help prisoners

the best part is the early releases and decreased recidivism will almost assuredly "pay for itself" (i hate that phrase, but you get what i mean)

Well, something is better than nothing, but pumping more money into prisons doesnt help where the real reform is needed, on the front end.

If people cant see why back end solutions are more favorable to certain interests, then not much reasonable discussion can be had. Sentancing reform would cost the tax payer nothing.

There are actually a lot of free (to client) programs available out there already - usually involving business & community college partnership. The easiest and cheapest method of doing sometching like this would be to use this relatively low investment of tax dollars to work with already established programs. Idk if that’s what they are doing but it would be the way I would organize this type of program - and already effectively have on a local level twice.

I'm all for it.

Less recidivism = less resources being wasted.
