Watched a fascinating report about self isolated people in Japan called Hiki Kamoray (spelling it phonetically). English translation is roughly 'the reclusives'.

Their motivation was not virus. They've been a growing population for years. 30,000 of these people are found dead in their tiny apartments every year. Some commit suicide but most just die earlier than normal due to depression and rapidly declining health.

They are not hoarders living in garbage. They keep neat but minimalist living quarters. The connection to the virus problem is that experts on this condition warn that normal people who are now being encouraged to seclude themselves could develop depression if this lasts too long. People need socialization. Heck, they need to see sunlight. When the Hiki Kamoray are cured and return to the outside world their number one problem is sunlight. It hurts their eyes because they haven't seen it in 10 years.

They explained it. People in Europe and the US value individuality. You get self worth from within. People in Japan do not value individuality. They value how well you function within the group. If you do poorly at being accepted by the group you have no self worth and you withdraw.

I would think that many of these people have “issues “ to begin with, if they make that choice to self-isolate.

They're shut-ins. Some of the hikikomori's are absolutely living in trash terrified of having to interact with the world. Should read some more about it here.

Normal individuals do need some level of socialization. If someone needs literally no socialization whatsoever(No phone calls, going to the grocery store, talking or interacting with any human or animal at all) they have mental problems.

I've also seen concerns that many people could develop agoraphobia or other social phobias.

quote:

Typical agoraphobia symptoms include fear of:

Leaving home alone
Crowds or waiting in line
Enclosed spaces, such as movie theaters, elevators or small stores
Open spaces, such as parking lots, bridges or malls
Using public transportation, such as a bus, plane or train

I could see how this specific situation could cause some strange social phobias like this.

Yeah, that's why solitary confinement in prison was so dreaded.

He just hit their zeitgeist G-spot. The issue goes deeper and further back than that.

Read a little about the Meiji Restoration and it will lay some groundwork for how social stratification still drives their high sense of “unhingedness”.

OK, I gotta tell my favorite true story about Godzilla. The guy who wore the costume in the first Godzilla movie died a couple years ago. I watched his last TV interview when he was old.
He got the job because he was the tallest guy they could find. The suit was bulky and extremely hot under studio lights. He complained to the director.
The director said: 'No problem. We'll let you go and hire another guy.'
His response: "No, no. That's OK. I can handle it. So sorry."
