Don't like to speak ill of the dead, but I had to interact with him on a few occasions, and could see he wasn't the brightest bulb on the Christmas tree.

Obtw, and appropriately on the day J. Bennett Johnston passes away, thanks to all of you baws (and elders) who gave Louisiana 4 terms of Edwin Edwards.

I'm not from South Louisiana originally (actually from Mississippi and have roots in Northeast Louisiana), but understand how things work in a state and how his actions screwed the majority of the state vs. his hometown. I actually want to have more northern Louisiana influence on state politics, but you don't want my support, so why should I advocate for northern Louisiana?

I'm just messin' with you.

I am glad that I-49 runs thru Shreveport/Bossier, though. We really needed it, and it should've been built years before it was. Traveling North, once you get past Alexandria there's no big population center in North Central Louisiana. Nothing to compare with Shreveport/Bossier, anyway.

Ironically, the one good think I heard about the crook known as Edwin Edwards is that he did actually play a role in building I-49. So. I guess he wasn't all bad.

I remember how he fought against the Strategic Defense Initiative crying, "It won't work. It won't work." I guess history proved him wrong.

Back when the state had this sort of unwritten rule of one N La and one S La Senator. He seemed particularly useless. Had no clue he was still alive either.

JohnsTon. He wasn’t all that. Just a run of the mill smooth talking democrat grifter who fooled the low IQ voters time after time.

Oakes got Louisiana Tech into the WAC…or was at least part of that move.

Only LSU and Tulane in the SEC can top that conference affiliation in the state of Louisiana. There was some amazing football and basketball played in Ruston, Louisiana during that brief WAC membership.

Oakes was a political hire at the exact wrong time. Some of those money games were just brutal. Also, Oakes was laser focused in a clean program. He was a Tech guy all the way through….he was simply not the right man for that job at that time…..and he caught hell from the small, yet rabid core fan base.

A lot of Texas politicians took credit for the routing of I-69 too. Im not sure Alexandria was ever realistic.

J. Bennett dyed the top of his head so it looked like he had hair from a distance.

I had know idea he was still alive. I went to CCD with his son Hunter. His wife was a very devout Catholic.

Greatest combover ever. Started behind his ear and ALL the way over.

Also, got more money for the Red River locks and dams than was imagined in its time. Was considered one of the most wasteful spending projects ever in its time, but J Bennet was able to garner support for it. He pulled a tremendous amount of money to Louisiana. Good or bad, he pulled it.

Screwed this State his whole career. I am sure he was a good man to his family and friends. But one of the old guard corrupt democrats of this state. That should be his legacy as a politician.

Rest in peace and my god bless his soul.

Do not forget he had the loop built in Shreveport because it would grow faster than Baton Rouge.

The Loop in Baton Rouge was going start up in Scotlandville and loop out to Denham Springs and back down to Gonzales.

Shreveport and the surrounding area is not much larger than it was in the early 80's, and Baton Rouge and the surrounding area is over 1 million.

This project was also going to put the third bridge in Scotlandville and build another route to Alexander to connect into the interstate going though Alex.
