It is rarely mentioned that the 400billion in IP theft is paid for by consumers

We hear the mantra "tariffs are taxes to US consumers" over and over, yet no one mentions where the cost of IP theft goes. Do we think these "money grabbing, tax avoiding corporate monsters" just benevolently lower their profit margins and eat the cost?

Of course not, why do you think US consumers pay 100 bucks more for Nikes and Frozen school book bags than other countries do. Who pays for our astronomical budget on military R&D to continually compete against our tech that was stolen.

Yet no one mentions that.

Because people will buy them and have enough purchasing power to buy them at that price? And some people will wait in line for hours to get the new Jordan’s. But do other countries really only pay $20-$30 bucks for some of the new Nikes? Regardless I’m guessing price elasticity is something important here.

That's not his point. He is saying that Tariffs and IP theft are on equal ground.

But you are missing the point. By allowing the Chinese to sell the knockoffs it takes away a market for Nike. This results in increased prices for people who are actually buying Nikes.

I feel like the OP used a sawed off shotgun to attempt to make a point that required a sniper rifle.

Well then wouldn’t that theoretically decrease the demand for the Nike’s, since people are buying the knock-offs, and with a lower demand, put downward on the price?

I'm no Nike fan, but they did $3.4B in footwear sales in China in 2018.

Just sayin.....

I'm not saying IP theft isn't a thing.............but just trying to keep some clarity here

Yes. If a market completely disregards cheaper alternatives, then competition somehow increases prices.

I know Nike sales in US are more than double that of chini, and there are a lot more chinese than Americans, and them little tiny chini feet mean cost of goods are a lot cheaper. Just kidding we are getting way off the rails.

At least we agree, IP theft of 400 billion is costing the US and is passed to the consumers, and no one talks about it.

I’m still trying to figure out how your example supports your argument. In 2007 the per capita income was $51,485 in the US while it was $6,568 in China. That means the US’s income is about 7.8 times China’s. So shouldn’t prices be much more here than in China or wherever else they’re much cheaper and income is much less?

Adjusted net income per capita by nation

The worst part of IP theft is that it costs jobs for your workers.

They sell their products cheaper which in the short term benefits the consumer but in the mid-term to long term it ends up costing workers jobs.
