Probably a contract. Big money in government contracts

Time to send the SoL to Lake Havasu?
Considering the statue is on Liberty Island? Yeah, it probably does.
You have to run the ferries to and from the island to bring people and supplies. That doesn’t even go into salaries for everyone involved.

Aren't there restaurants and shops on the island too? Cost doesn't seem unrealistic. It isn't something you can just walk down the street and go see.

Tourists pay for the ferries to run
Tickets are 18.50 for those 13+
The Statue of liberty itself has a charge too
Free to go in the Pedestal but $3 to go up to the crown.

Are you asking if that's necessary or if that's what the contract says?
Is it necessary, not at all. Did someone connected with the budget and finance committee start up a "tourist attraction management company" and bid on the exact amount deemed necessary? yeh, probably so.

So net net it loses 65K a day? Or it just costs 65K a day to keep open without accounting for revenue it makes?

Have you ever been? I’m surprised it’s not more given the amount of security involved.

Is this an expense metric or bottom line (expense less revenue)?

At 10,000 visitors a day, it should be easy to make this profitable for the US gov't. They should be making money off of it and definitely not losing.

Hard to tell since Government contracts are so screwed up
The government usually pays for the same service 3 or 4 times.
I'll give an example.
At a particular agency they have a contractor who moves people from 1 cubicle to another.
They have full time people who do all the jobs that are necessary for a move.
People who actually hook up and move equipment
People who change the phone numbers
Network people who change the port settings
etc etc
BUT
They still charge the government $2500 a person to move them
Less than a year ago 10 cubes were reconfigured to allow more people in the lab I work.
The original 10 people were "moved" to another building at 2500 each
The cubes were reconfigured and they charged 2500 each to move the 10 people back
What is even better is the people didn't actually ever really move. The lab was a classified lab and the people couldn't work outside it.
So they actually sat in the conference room and worked while the cubes were reconfigured.
Still had to pay that second move fee even though nothing was done.

With the way Washington is run, I bet it’s double that to close it.
I think there are two prongs to this expenditure.
1. Government Bloat, meaning that they just don't give a damn in containing costs.
2. There are black line items that we don't know about and are rolled into other visible line items.

Over 12k people a day visit the statue. It takes a lot to handle those numbers.
