If he would have stuck with his gut and chose Leiberman as his running mate he probably would have been president. Instead he listened to his handlers and picked Palin who ended up being a major distraction, justified or not. The poll numbers were pretty tight, he selects Palin and he soars ahead, then she eventually becomes a laughingstock and they nosedive. Bring on the POW jokes.

He was never going to win. VP pick didn't matter.

Not so sure about that. People were looking for a centrist candidate that would unite the country. A former Dem/ libertarian VP pick is the epitome of centrist. His age/health would be the biggest deterrent against a youthful candidate. Leiberman was an Independent at that time.

I'm guessing he probably regrets getting shot down by the Viet Cong, being water boarded, and giving up information that got other soldiers killed while he was POW more than not choosing limp-wristed Joe Leiberman as a running mate.

To be honest, had he not chosen Palin, I would've voted for Ron Paul.

The only reason I voted for mcshame was Palin. I knew he was a democrate in republican clothing but I knew obama was far worse.

There was no Republican candidate at the time that would have beaten Obama regaurdless of who they would have picked as VP.

That old piece of shite has a lot and his airing of his ideas makes his earlier sacrifices seem like ...well...you know...

He has no regrets. He’s mooched off the people his entire career and is about to die as a very rich man. It is a shame that he won’t be around for the final draining of the swamp that he was such an integral part of.

Poll numbers were tighter than people remember. Up until mid Sept/ early Oct. Then the Tina Fey version of Palin and the angry old man perception of McCain became the visual consciounsness of the American voter.

I still refuse to believe Obama won the 2012 election outright and it would not surprise me one bit if the polls were rigged in 08. Based on what we now know from the 2016 election, nothing surprises me these days.

That said, the eight years we endured of Obama’s shite stains gave us the GEOTUS.

Unfortunately that’s correct. It is a shame a war veteran is going down like this. McCain really pissed in his own face the last ten years of his political career.

McCain seemed to go against his party out of some kind of political calculation to build up a resume that would be appealing to the mythical Independents and so called moderate Dems. It was clear that he had his eyes on a presidential run.

People will claim he put his country over party but the truth is he put his own political ambition above all.

You usually pick a VP to balance the ticket, capture a demographic or regional support. He wasn't going to get that with 2 out of those 3 in Palin. The truth is he knew he overplayed his hand and pissed off the conservative base. That's why he chose her and not Leiberman and ran with that stupid moniker "Maverick" to turn his perceived weakness into some kind of redeeming quality.

A McCain/Leiberman ticket would have been even more of a disaster.
