Anybody who was involved in the Iraq War or knows anything about Iraq should be familiar with Muqtada al-Sadr.
While it looks like he won't be Prime Minister, he is set to gain a lot of power.

The Sairoon Alliance of Shia leader Muqtada al-Sadr is set to win Iraq's parliamentary elections in a remarkable comeback after being sidelined for years by Iranian-backed rivals.
With over 91 percent of votes counted in 16 of Iraq's 18 provinces, Iran-backed Shia militia chief Hadi al-Amiri's Fatah (Conquest) Coalition was in second place, while Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi's Nasr (Victory) Coalition once seen as the frontrunner, came in third.
quote:
Unlike Abadi, a rare ally of both the US and Iran, Sadr is an opponent of both countries, which have wielded influence in Iraq since a US-led invasion toppled Saddam Hussein in 2003 and thrust the Shia majority into power.

Just give me the skinny...is this good or bad for murica? I can't read that farsi crap.

The Iranian backed guy came in 2nd. The US backed guy placed 3rd. Sadr was backed by communists and left leaning coalition.
Could have been better, could have been worse is my sense.

Will be classic when he tries to teach Iraqi schoolchildren about gender fluidity!

Example # 2,137 as to why America's desire to "spread democracy" in the Middle East is absolutely foolish.

Sadr ran a large insurgent militia in southern Iraq when I was there.....

He basically had his own army of followers every since Saddam was killed.
Of course recently he has been an advocate of peace since ISIL was run out of Iraq and has even called for al-Assad to step down.
To me it seems like the dude is a damn bootlicker who takes whatever stance that will keep him relevant at the time. I think his true policies are the ones that he took in helping the Sunni rebels in Fallujah in 2004.....He'll probably be hell for the rank and file Iraqi if he wins any significant power.

Should have killed that piece of shite when we had the chance.

This is actually good news for US. He is anti-Iran and the Saudi have rejoiced

We were maybe 60-90 days away from wiping the Mahdi Army out in Sadr City in the 06-07 time frame.
So what did we do? stood down and gave al Sadr millions.

We have a talent at attempting to buy the loyalty of people who absolutely hate us.

All the hard fighting had been done, all the key terrain taken and held and "Bunny" (al Sadr) and his command group had hauled arse to France.
So many frick ups in Iraq but this one stands out.

He’ll bring stability to the region.
Stability is better than isis and al quaeda.
Even though the stability isn’t in our favor.

Iraq War Vet here having served with the 1st Cavalry Division in Baghdad from 03'-04'. I've been to Sadr City...if his followers are any indication of his feelings towards America....then things aren't looking good. Sadr City was a living hell.
