I went in to buy a 64gb micro card for my RetroPie project. Faintly bearded 19 year old associate was having a discussion with his supervisor, a very chubby 23 year old (or so). She was enjoying the attention.

They were lamenting an Alabama vote doesn't count. His position was that we have the technology to have a TRUE democracy where popular vote wins (RE: Presidential elections)

I resisted the urge to engage them, purchased my card and walked away. We lost the youth somewhere.

I'd have said two things:

1. Stay in school.
2. Don't get fired from Walmart.

A simple "democracy" is an extremely dangerous form of government.

Especially if you're a sheep.

I just had my 12 year old do the political compass test and she leaned heavily Libertarian. It’s how you raise them. Most parents think the school district are the real parents and a fricksticks

Ok, they have a point, but then a little shite state shouldn't get two senators either.

Alabama's vote still wouldn't count.

Secondly, Trump never spent a single campaign dollar in New York, his home state, because he knew the electoral votes were going blue. If the rules of the game were popular vote, there's no guarantee Trump still wouldn't have won because he would have campaigned totally differently. There are alot of hard blue states where republicans don't even bother voting because they know it doesn't matter. So why do people think that if we had a popular vote system that Trump still wouldn't have won?

Whether one agrees with them or not, it’s not an unreasonable position to hold. Since 1913, every other election we have is settled by popular vote. Now, I would prefer to roll it back than continue it forward, but clutching your pearls over a couple of kids holding the exact same position the current president of the United States held less than half a decade ago is hardly a sign of the apocalypse.

It is QUITE the unreasonable position to hold. Without the Electoral College, every President from here through eternity would be elected by California and New York (State). We see what stellar successes they are. The electoral college protects us from the a-hole(s) of America choosing our leaders.
