Thinking about this scene, I had always heard that the director, John McTiernan, started rolling film here and had told Alan Rickman he was going to count down to the point where they'd release his harness and he'd "fall." Obviously it's mostly SFX, but the initial footage of him falling that first 20 feet or so is real.
Anyway, instead of releasing when he said, he basically did the Dad thing and went early...capturing true terror in Rickman's eyes. Rickman was apparently super pissed at him after that...
