Intelligence officials warned lawmakers that Russia was interfering in the 2020 campaign to try to get Trump re-elected, a disclosure that angered Trump, who complained Democrats would use it against him

Some current and former officials speculated to NYT that the intelligence briefing may have played a role in the removal of acting DNI Maguire, who had told people in recent days that he believed he would remain in the job.

This puts the Grenell appointment — and the timing of it — into perspective: Trump lashes out at Maguire after finding out about this briefing (which took place last week), and installs a loyalist as acting DNI less than a week later.

Grenell will now oversee, presumably, the renewed cybersecurity cooperation with the Kremlin—!—that Trump has ordered. Maybe this sheds new light on why Trump was *so angry* that the intelligence community revealed to Congress on February 13 that Putin is aiding Trump again?

More anonymous officials, more hearsay.

They can speculate all they want. Maguire, as an interim, by statute has a limited number of days that he can serve. That time has come. He had to be replaced. Grenell will still remain as Ambassador to Germany, and will return to Berlin when his interim status expires.

Trump did not fire Maguire. Maguire’s term is up on March 12 because Trump did not nominate him to be confirmed by the senate.

I forget what the law is called but Trump can backfill positions that require senate confirmation on a short term basis (I forget the length of time...I believe 9 months).

I believe Trump is now going to play hardball with the Senate and simply appoint his people on a short term basis. Grenell will leave in 9 months and will be backfilled by another MAGA guy until the Senate wants to play.
