I’m glad I didn’t have to deal with the college admissions process this era: this is sad

College admission season update - From a friend:

“Niece got 1450 SAT, 4.2 GPA, competitive athlete. She didn’t even get into her safety schools. Going to junior college this year and is very depressed. The POC kids in her class, C students at best, are all headed to Berkeley, UCLA, USC, and Stanford.”

What an insult to meritocracy.

A few years ago in my area, a high school student who took nearly every AP class, 4.6 gpa, committed suicide because he failed to get into any of the U-California schools he applied to. His parents were Cambodian immigrants who owned a donut shop. It was absolutely heartbreaking.

If there is one area of America with systemic racism in America, it’s in college admissions

It’s your politics that created this disaster.

Might as well prepare them for the racism they will experience when they apply for jobs early.

Making any decision based on race is inarguably racist and that it’s openly a part of admissions in 2023 by public universities is inexcusable.

TBH… having a a degree from any of those schools that you mentioned is not a guarantee for success. Surely, it helps but having a solid reputation in your field of discipline can enhance your career more than just being an institutional byproduct.

Affirmative action = systemic racism.

And this is proof that the U.S.A. does not believe racism to be evil.

If the whole of the people truly believed this, affirmative action would be abolished.

I have said for a long time that racism is a simple classification tool that is completely morally neutral.

The goals that the tool is used for is where the moral good or bad comes in.
At the moment affirmative action, which utilizes racism in the open sunlight, is deemed a moral good.

It won’t be long before degrees from those schools will be avoided like a plague. It all looks good on paper until you have to deal with their crap and a business starts losing money.

What did you think was going to happen- when you hold down one, to raise another?
The slippery slope… is slippery. Go figure.

Probably an attention whoring liar… while this type of thing happens every year, those numbers would get you into a huge number of great schools.

My daughter wasn’t even close to that SAT score and was accepted into Auburn, Georgia and Arkansas. The only school that turned her down was Washington.

Thomas Sowell explained how 'mismatching' causes this. It starts with the Ivy Leagues. To achieve diversity they have to offer scholarships to blacks who would a better fit for UCLA-tier.
Those students are raided by the Ivies so UCLA-tier has to drop down and go after blacks who would be a better fit for La. Tech or Stephan F. Austin.
That means La. Tech and SFA have to go after black kids who should be in Jr. College, Grambling or vocational educ.

Meritocracy has been replaced by quotas.

Unfortunately, certain groups are immune from overrepresentation and don’t have this issue.

It’s all a bit ridiculous, but I’d also be wary of the uncle and student somehow knowing the GPA of the other students getting in. Assuming they are C students is a bit ridiculous.

In time, the credibility of these "prestigious" schools will plummet.

There might be a sliding scale but it doesn't slide that far. This isn't even in the realm of being believable.

Wife was 4th in her class, black girl was 17th. Both wanted to go to Wake Forest. Guess who got in and on a full ride?

It is a component of the New World Order revolution which also happens to meet the objectives of the radical left.

There was a thread on this yesterday.
I'd be surprised if the folks involved are not taking liberties with the actual facts. Humor rumor ... the parents of a niece told the uncle who who told me ...

This is the problem in these situations. The people left out in this situation tend to magically see the disparity way further than it is in reality.

I am not defending this practice because I have seen it’s implementation backfire first hand, but in reality most of the kids getting in that are minorities are not C students. They are good students and you should consider the circumstances with each.

A kid, no matter the race, that has to work a job to help their family while in school, and doesn’t have the funds for private tutoring, standardized test prep, etc are going to be given some understanding as to what their scores/GPA may be different.

Again, this is irrelevant of race. Unfortunately, some schools overdo that adjustment and it backfires on everyone. The bigger issue is more and more people going to colleges and limited number of spots. That is where things need to
be changed.

The only kids we hire from “prestigious” schools are engineers from MIT. The rest are from Purdue, UCF, GT, etc. I wouldn’t touch a Liberal Arts grad from Berkeley for any amount of money.
